What defines a favorable B&W photo?

I know this is an open ended question but being a newbie to the B&W world what criteria define a favorable B&W from that which is not. Sorry I could not be more definite in my question but I believe the folks on this forum can share some thoughts on this for me.

Thanks!

1. Do you like it.
2. Does it have a full range of tones without blocked out or burnt out areas.

That's about the key to it and 1 is far more important than 2.

You'll get lots of other more detailed answers but get the bones right and it'll all fall in place.

The answer is simple, "light" and vision

Lighting is important for all photography. but more so with monochrome. Without colour we need a substitute. A good striking mono image needs 3 elements, Tonal range, contrast and texture, this can be at taking stage or created through vision on your computer screen.

By using "light" we create mood another important factor. heres a picture to show what I mean.
Early morning, side on frontal light

Converted

The light has created texture, tonal range and contrast and added a classic mood of layering.

So for landscape, right time of day and light that will enhance, defines what makes a favourable BW to one which is not.

1 is the most important
2 I have seen an actual Bill Brandt print of the train going over the viaduct rule 2 was totally dis obeyed!

Composition does help and that is subjective but there are the rule of using thirds and having circles in the image incomplete and making sure the eyes in portraits are sharp...you need the 'eye', most of us struggle but some of us are luck enough to have it... so just keep practising and asking questions....
