Carl Zeiss Lenses (Canon Users)

Hi all,

I have just been browsing the Carln Zeiss UK site and I notice that there are several Carl Zeiss lenses available in their ZE mount (EF mount). The lenses in question are:

Distatgon T* 2.8/21
Planar T* 1.4/50
Planar T* 1.4/85

I don't think the Distagon will be available (due to production issues) until mid 2009 in the ZE mount (or the ZK mount for that matter) and is a manual focus (which I like).

Have any members got any experience of using Carl Zeiss lenses?

Is this another reason for me to trade up from my 400D to a 1D mkIII?

Hugh

I have Hugh, I used to have a Contax system, the lens are nothing short of superb, build quality was as good as Canon L series when I used them, I don't think you will see a noticeable difference in the primes comparing Canon L and Zeiss. I think the lens will perform better on the MK3 because of its glorious sensor , and twin digic processors, the main thing you will lose is the auto focus and that is one good reason to go Canon L

Thanks Martin,

You know I think I preferred it when I only had the option of manual focus - I felt much more involved and in control of the photographic process when I had to focus manually. The only reason I don't manually focus now is this option (on my Sigma) is a pile of pants (very loose ring emoticon and no focus screen on the 400D).

I am seriously considering starting to save up for the mkIII and a couple of new lenses (which is why I have been trawling around websites).

Regards

Hugh

I own and love my ZE 50 mm planar, and use it quite a bit. I too at this point have the 400d, and will be upgrading in the next month or so to the 5dmk2 to get a little more out of my lenses. It performs great on the 400d, and I don't really miss the autofocus that much. giver a try emoticon

Before going fully digital in mid-2005, I had the Contax G2 rangefinder + Carl Zeiss lenses (28mm f2.8 Biogon T*, 45mm f2 Planar T* & 90mm f2.8 Sonnar T*) black outfit. Image quality was on a par with Leica, as ascertained by published comparitive tests.

Although unused since mid-2005, I could not until now bring myself to part with it recently! These particular lenses were full autofocus with no provision for manual and I finally gave up on the hope that someone would bring out a Canon-fit adaptor.
