Re: Noise for a beginner

Hmmm... I'll have to give that a go. Some of the tips I've seen I think only work with full Photoshop, so no good for me.

This is one of the images (sorry for posting in colour, but it really is with the aim of improving my B&W work as well). It was very dark under the building and this is after my repair.

Image

There may be some traces of colour noise left as I only worked on the floor and the boy. This is a crop before repair, but I don't know how it will look in here.

Image

First of all, is this terrible noise, or what you might expect at ISO 4000? Is it me, or can you also see patterns appearing as horizontal and vertical groups? I used the clone and heal tool on his back and then a general light blur to get rid of the patterns. I think the repair works for me, but I'd like to know I'm heading in the right direction.

I've also been looking at Noise Ninja and thinking my birthday isn't too far away (although my husband forgot last year). emoticon
If he forgets again I think he owes me the full version of Photoshop emoticon

at 4000 iso that's the sort of noise you must expect. Imagine how much grain there would be in a film that speed?

I don't use NN and CS2 has lousy noise filters so I am at a dead end. Other help please...

well I would be happy with noise like that, you are never going to remove it as if it had never been there but your after shot looks okay...
I assume you have PS Elements?

CApture One 4 - general pre processor before PSE - cheaper than the full PS
Image

LAB a+b channel blur - if you can convert profiles in PSE then this is a 'free' one
Image

Astro Tools - think they have a PSE version

Also download the NEAT image demo

Right - I was just about to reply to Bill and Chris stepped in. It's reassuring to know this is normal. Bear in mind I never intended to go digital and having won the camera I didn't even research the pros and cons.

Yes, I upgraded to Elements 6 from Elements 3 a little while ago. The things Chris mentions are unknown to me and to be honest I'm not sure what to make of the results. One has done better with the noise, but is softer. I did a silly thing and didn't post a crop of the repaired version, but this is what I managed by hand. I wouldn't like to do it on a larger area, but it seems to have done the trick.

I really do feel so much happier now. It's been pretty daunting trying to teach myself this digital stuff after 30 years of film. emoticon

Whew - that's a relief! Why do they insist noise isn't a problem though? For someone who doesn't get the time to look around, reading that you can shoot at ISO 6400 with almost no noise is stretching the truth a bit. I've been thinking it was me or that I had a duff camera.

Now I've got a better idea of what I'm doing, I'm keen to process some more. Trouble is the other half is at a meeting on the other side of the country tomorrow and I have the zoo to do on my own before work. The last time it took me 5.5 hours, so I think I'll be getting up at 2.00 to see to our ferret and then just staying up. Matchsticks anyone? emoticon

Because it isn't to the great unwashed majority who want a 6 x 4 print for the album - at least that's what I suspect.

I think you're right. The camera is aimed at the very keen amateur or professional though, so why they've added functions for shooting portraits, sport, sunsets etc. is beyond me. I like the camera, but I don't use 99% of it.

The really funny thing is that my other cameras are 70 and 30 years old respectively, but the Sony (I think) has now been discontinued after only 18 months. I could witter on about nothing being built to last, but then I'm the person who was still using the same camera battery after 25 years... emoticon

Hi Zooey,

You have to bear in mind that you hacve pushed the Sony to extremes having the ISO at 4000. I would imaging that, at lower or more normal ISOs (say 100 to 400) that the noise levels would be hugely different.

You are right about things not being built to last though. Most camera models seem to be on 18 month product cycles now (and a lot of the software as well) - mind you this is not just limited to cameras though.

Chris mentioned Capture One 4 in his post, this is a piece of stand alone software by Capture One (Danish digi back manufcatureres) and it processes RAW files and outputs them as TIFFs (or JPEGS). It costs about 99 Euros which is a fraction of what PS costs.

Regards

Hugh

Thanks Hugh. Yes, you're right and with film that image wouldn't have been possible. I've noted the Capture One details too, but I'm generally happy with Elements 6. The organiser has a few bugs, but the speed at which I work it's not a problem!

Excuse me while I just pop back and check Martin's photograph of Jack Sparrow... emoticon
