Dark slides

Hi all,

I start my photography degree in about a month and have a list of essentials that I need to obtain before I start at uni, one of these is...

Either a Toyo or Fidelity 4x5 darkslide.

Showing my total ignorance on the subject, is there a difference between 4 x 5 and 5 x 4 as I cant find any 4 x 5 on ebay but loads of 5 x 4????

Thanks

Mark

Honestly, You're starting university!
length x breadth or breadth x length. This is a cultural thing I suspect. It doesn't matter, but why not visit Toyo's web site?

Of coarse I know the difference between lxb and bxl but thought it could possibly be a typo or another explanation as I explained that I couldnt find any on ebay. I have no experience of these cameras and was looking for some helpful advice from people who I thought would be in the know, yes I could have got the answer from a thousand other places but I decided to put the question here as its a learning forum, sorry, its probably my culture!

Hi Mark I don't have an answer at all, but I can see how actually one could imagine they might be totally different things. I don't have a clue what it refers to but I can imagine that they might refer to height by width in a non-swivel-able set-up, in which case they could be very different animals.

I do hope you continue to find this forum a mine of useful info while at uni - at least I hope it gives you the edge in B+W!

Good luck with your studies emoticon

I have no experience of using large format either and since the body does not rotate on these cameras i might have asked the same question.

You'll maybe find some info here

http://www.largeformatphotography.info/

There is also a UK forum for field / view cameras but damned if I can find it right now.
