16 bit or 8

Almost all my colour images are 16 bit. I drop the odd one to 8 when I want to edit using a tool only available in 8 bit. That said I've never noticed a difference in quality, just file size.

So what do you use to save B&W?

It's a no-brainer, 16 bit for sure, much smoother tonal range.

Agree with the above - 8 bit usualy reserved for jpeg conversion.

Question back to you though - when you have used one of the 8 bit only filters do you then change the mode back to 16 bits?

I used to do so always, now I will do it if I have more editing to do afterwards. The answer was pretty much what I expected, thanks all but my tech knowledge feels a bit light in this area so best to gain the expert advice of you guys.
