Not so keen on this Dave. You have caught his face beautifully but I find the placement awkward, being almost centred and the oof area overpowering.

I would crop this right down to head and shoulders.

Thanks Bill. I will play around with the crop and see what I come up with. One thing about shooting at 1.4 this close, the depth of field is razor thin.

Dave

But the eyes are spot on and that is the beauty of a fast lens. I would love a 1.2 (either 50 or 85) but can't justify the expense for the amount of people pics I do.

tried the 85 1.2mk2 and while the bokeh IS stunning getting the thing to focus fast enough was a real pain - it's really slow focussingl slow!

Just wanted to try it to see but like you dont shoot enough people to justify it.

I would be going for a shorter focal length first. The 24 mkii I think would be first on my list for my style of shooting. Then a 50. Then an 85.

Bill, the 85 is not the fastest focusing lense, but don't forget that Simon is just using a 5D MKII. emoticon

even worse: it was on the MK1 5D!

But it was stupidly slow!

I also had the 85 1.8 and agree with Martin that from 2.8 onwards it is as sharp if not sharper around f 5.6
