South Bank
Another one from my recent trip to London. I'm afraid I'm veering back to colour again, as the original has blue columns and a lovely yellow light coming through the window on the right. I quite like the conversion though.

Re: South Bank
Some images work for me only in colour too. I think you have done well with this though, despite how you feel about it.

Re: South Bank
Well the funny thing is that I used to take only colour. Then I started entering the photography competitions at work, but I felt my work was too "girly". I did a U turn and went all B&W and moody, but since I've had the Sony I've fallen in love with colour all over again. I'm still struggling with the flexibility of the digital camera in that you can have one or the other, or both.

Re: South Bank
I have found that even when an image works well in colour, it doesn't mean it can't work just as well in b&w. Obviously the processing is different, a black and white image will impart a totally different mood/ambience than colour if handled properly. For this image here, the potential is greater than you think. The tones look flat, there is still much that can be done with the textures. If you look at your histogram you will see what I mean. Try increasing the contrast and you will see some unbelievable tones. Then paint back the highlight areas. What you should end up with is a beautiful monochrome image.

Re: South Bank
Thanks Steven. The histogram was actually touching both right and left, but I'll give it another go. I have to inject our diabetic cat right now and put the chickens to bed, but I'll try and get another version before my bed time

Re: South Bank
Right - I don't know what this is going to look like. An interesting point though, I used the Convert B&W tool again, but with different settings and although they gave much more contrast the histogram didn't go over the edges. It gained one tiny break and was maybe a bit choppier along the top, but that was it. I'm still having problems sharpening small images and having the blacks in particular shoot off the sides.

A bit of full black does not bother me, I don't even mind a smidge of paper white so long as it is only very small. Small areas of full black add drama to an image.

Re: South Bank
Bill - I love you for saying that! I've spent the past few years trying to cram everything into the histogram, but gut feeling sometimes tells me an image is a tad better with a tiny amount of black. Also, Martin's darker areas have lovely detail, but mine just seem to end up looking blotchy
