Contrast masking
A way of reducing highlight burn out and opening shadows, as always can also be applied selectively using a mask and painting back where required.
Here's a quick work flow of how to setup and apply the contrast mask, but do experiment as there are lots of ways to fine tune the effect.
First open the image, it will work in colour or black and white, duplicate the layer and give it a name "contrast mask".
Next go to image/ adjustments /desaturate, click OK, then go to image/ adjust/ invert,OK, we now have a negative image, what we have done is reversed the tones now we have to apply the effect.
Double click the contrast mask layer and and in the blending options select overlay, click OK.
Now go to filter/ blur/ Gaussian blur, pick a radius between say 10 and 50, [experiment with this].click OK
You will now see that without any burn or dodge technique your image has better highlight and shadow detail, you can fine adjust the opacity with the slider in the layers palette , you can alter the blend mode, or add an additional adjustment layer.
Because I do shot into the light quite often I find that my images have a very large dynamic range and this is one way to get more out of that kind of image.
For those that have not used the method, have a try at it and i think you will be surprised how simple but effective contrast masking is, it was used in the wet darkroom to great effect and is so much easier in the digital darkroom

Re: Contrast masking
Thanks for your input Steven, this was also a method of contrast control in the wet dark room, it is a powerful and east to apply tool. should be part of anyone's workflow
