Contrast masking variation

My usual contrast mask is;

Duplicate layer
invert
set to overlay
Gaussian Blur by 50 pixels (I vary the pixel dimension from time to time)

That usually works a treat but for this image whatever blur I selected resulted in a halo either over the tree tops or round the trunks.

So I came up with a variation;

Duplicate layer
Invert
Overlay mode soft light
Reduce opacity to 80%

Killed the contrast so much I ended up tweaking in levels and curves to finish, and not a halo to deal with anywhere!

(And before you mention it the tree tops are soft, they were blowing about in a gale but I needed a small aperture so only 1/40th shutter speed.)
