Exposure Blending

A great tutorial on this is http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com/videos/BlendedExposures.mov - it shows how to blend two exposures together, so you can make the most of a scene with a massive dynamic range. His other tutorial video on using an overlay layer for dodging and burning is also really instructive (not to mention the rest of the site which is full of PS tips, downloadable tools, and more.

Thanks Martin - I'll have to have a think, and see if there is anything I want to know. Actually - it was your 'Ask Martin' thread on POTN that inspired me to start dodging and burning, and really working hard on my B&W conversions, so thanks to you too Martin!

Update for Photoshop CS4 users:

The shortcut for selecting highlights Ctrl+Alt+Shift+~ mentioned in the tutorial is now defunct and replaced with Ctrl+Alt+2 in CS4

prior to CS4...if you Ctrl+Alt+Shift+~ and then click the layer mask icon you get a luminance mask on the layer
