Shooting into the light
This technique can give images with depth even a 3d look as the light is casting the shadow in front given great texture and luminosity.
Main points as to achieving good results
1/
Lens of high quality is the preferred option, these type Like Canon L series control flare very well even adding a star burst effect in some situations, the construction and special glass stops light bouncing about inside the elements which minimise degradation of the picture, not to say it cant be done with other lens but better results will be got using quality optics, lens used for this shot Canon 17~40 L
2/
Stop your lens down to minimum aperture
3/tripod mount cam is preferred, and bracket shots -1.5 + 1.5, the reason for this is to give greater range of exposures to play with if needed
4/
Always use Raw files and low ISO
5/
Good visualization is required as to where the light is actually fallen and reflecting off, as you can see in the colour file below what I could see was light in the grid, side railings and road this was the main areas to manipulate in PS
6/
Be prepared for cloning out unwanted highlights.
7/ treat Sun with respect its stronger than yur eyes
7/
Best time to take is when sun is low and not as strong and high as midday, I usually take early morn or evening
The image here is straight out of cam untouched, as you can see I have reduced the lens flare length and also remove highly reflected areas on the grass,[cant actualy see them in the col file but opened the shadows and there there] what we must try to remember is we are not trying to create what we have seen like e record shot but trying to create whats in our minds eye as a piece of artwork.
In this image and all into the light shots your main area of work is the light areas, I know on this colour file it dont look much but its there [thats where visualization comes into play] and the idea is to excentuate theses areas, using all the methods we have talked about , curves, C/M dodge and burn, etec etc etc,
Heres the fine result
From the BW you can now see where I have exentuated the light and cleaned things up a touch.
Any question just ask
Martin

Re: Shooting into the light
Yes Martin, fine is the right word.
I am sitting here in stunned disbelief!
The transformation is astounding...
My only thought at this point is:
I want to be able to do that...
Talk about inspirational!
--- Warm Wishes,
-Andy

Re: Shooting into the light
Hello Andy and welcome to the forum, well you got vizualise or have in mind what you want the outcome of the file to be like in mono before you start editing otherwise you will be in no mans land and going with the flow instead of going with the idea, I could give you a link to my digital-monochrome site with tutorials there to read , but unfortunately my bandwidth as been eaten up this month so will mail you the link when its back on line, keep posting images and get feedback from other members and you will start to see your skills in BW improving quickly

Re: Shooting into the light
Hi Martin and thank you very much. It's nice to be here. I play around with pencile and paper once in a while and I can say that I agree with visualization. Photo processing is a bit different but also similar. I really do like the idea very much and I'm looking forward to many hours of fun!
Here's a recent drawing that I made...

--- Warm Wishes,
-Andy
