ACR vs. DPP for highlight and shadow(Capture 1 Pro added)
I have compared a few shots that showed heavy clipping in ACR to DPP (canon software) DPP handles clipping better, much better. (for those of us shooting canon) I have included 2 screen shots to demonstrate. I should add that this is not a comparison of DPP to photoshop. I am looking at DPP as a raw editor only for times when you have more difficult shadow highlight situations.
ACR: Note that the exposure slider has been moved to -4. Clipping on sun and shadows.
DPP: Note that exposure slider is at -.50. One half stop.
clipping indication is enabled in DPP for shadow and highlight. Note the historgram also in both. Also in lower left corner I have moused over the sun. 251, 251, 251. There is plenty left to bring the sun down to 245 or so.
Capture One Pro latest version: For Chris
Exposure slider is at -1.25. No other adjustments.
It appears that both DPP and Capture 1 deal with clipping better than ACR, with DPP requiring the least amount of adjustment to correct the clipping. Although you cannot see it at this size, in Capture 1 there is still a little clipping in the suns reflection on the water at -1.25.
Thought this may be of interest to some.
Regards,

Re: ACR vs. DPP for highlight and shadow
I would only use it for exposure, and then send to photoshop. A raw converter.

Re: ACR vs. DPP for highlight and shadow
I'll try it especially since the reds in ACR for my 5D2 are way off IMO

Re: ACR vs. DPP for highlight and shadow
Hi Dave,
I have never bothered with DPP before now (and I am a Canon User) - I alays assumed that ACR would be better in all situations - goes to show eh!
I don't use ACR now though as I have shelled out on Phase One's Capture One 4 (not the Pro version though) which I find excellent. I may have to do this comnparision for myself between DPP and Capture One.
Regards
Hugh

Re: ACR vs. DPP for highlight and shadow
Hi Dave,
I will do.
My circumstances, at the moment, mean it may be a little while. I am currently living in Newcastle but my PC (with Photoshop, DPP, Capture One etc.) is still in Sheffield. I was hoping to get down to Sheffield mid week - but I may jhave to put that off if this weather continues!

Re: ACR vs. DPP for highlight and shadow
Hi Hugh, no hurry. I was that you were having some pretty heavy snow over there. Not fun when it starts plugging everything up.

Re: ACR vs. DPP for highlight and shadow
I am an Olympus user and have converted to Capture One 4. Its so much more controllable for noise and highlight/shadow recovery and i looked at a lot of raw converters before deciding to shell out me money...
Grab the trial and see how it handles the 5D2
