Photoshop CS4 - Any book(s) for beginners?

Have just installed CS4 and after Elements 6, clearly there are many new features and methods I need to become familiar with. Obviously I can plough through the built-in tutorials etc, but I feel I would benefit from a printed manual/book that I can dip into when away from the computer. There are a myriad of such things on Amazon and making a choice based on the brief descriptions/blurb is no easy matter emoticon

Any recommendations?

Hi Keith,

I was in the same situation as you a couple of years ago with CS3 and was told to get a book by Scott Kelby, i did and it is great and has helped me loads. I just checked Amazon and he has an updated book now for CS4 "The Adobe Photoshop CS4 book for Digital Photographers" £14.99.

Some people dont like his light hearted style of writing but he explains in a way that clicks with me. Off the top of my head i think there was a guy called Martin Evening who does the same stuff and i have heard some good things about his books but having not even picked one up i cant comment.

Hope that helps a bit.

Mark

Check out the books ina bookstore if at al possible. Scott kelby and Martin Evening have very different writing styles; while Scott is very humourous( depending on your taste) he is not as organised as Martin Evening. Certainly they are the best knpown authors. Personally I recommend getting both.

However can I recommend my real preference for learnig photoshop: I MUCH prefer using DVDs as a from of training, you can follow along on the computer and see/do works best for me.

Google:Katrin Eisman amd Chris Orwig. They both produce excellent dvds. I have asked my local library to stock their dvds and they have been happy to get them in

I have to confess that I have a full bookshelf of photoshop books and have not read even one of them although I have occasionally dipped into them. I just fall asleep whenever I read technical books but I didnt discover that until after I bought them! lol

That's why I recommend dvds (especially Martins!) emoticon

Mark & Simon,

Thanks for the responses. It looks like I'll just have to venture into town (something I normally avoid if at all possible) and browse the bookshelves.

Simon - interesting to read your comment re a shelf-full of unread books and a preference for learning via DVD. I like delving into books but have a year's worth of untouched PS CS/Elements/Canon DPP hints/tips CD's from Photoplus magazine emoticon
I did check out your suggestion re Katrin Eisman amd Chris Orwig, but they do not appear to (yet) have produced CS4-specific DVD's.

PS - edited to add - whoops emoticon
Just tried following a different link (www.lynda.com) and found a series of CS4 specific titles by Orwig.

That is certainly something I will be pursuing - especially as I just discovered the Photoshop CS4 for Photographers (PC DVD) by Orwig is over £84 on Amazon.
