Protecting the Histogram Ends


In the July 09 Monochrome worker Bill mentions watching the histogram to avoid blocking shadows or blowing highlights as you work
Here is a trick i use

Image

now add a threshold layer
set the threshold to say 5
press enter and set the layer opacity to around 50%

Image

this layer can switched off and on as you work to show the area beyond your threshold.
You can repeat this for the highlights with say a threshold of 250

Interesting, I've never used this method before. As you may or may not know, there is an easier way of determining this using the curves or levels histogram.
