Which fine art papers do you recommend?
Up to now, I've been using Epson Enhanced matte, semigloss, etc. Would love to hear some suggestions on other medium priced papers and why you'd choose them.

Re: Which fine art papers do you recommend?
Lol yes very expensive to make mistakes, , i find that you are better to do test on smaller sheets, like in a dark room and get it right before the A3 , but apart from the textured surface that does look nice and the non acid side, Enhanced matt takes some beating for value for money

Re: Which fine art papers do you recommend?
I have standardised on 2 archival papers now, Permajet's Fibre Based Unglazed Gloss, followed by their Delta Fibre Matt. Both very nice papers.
If I want a cheap 'not gauranteed to last' non fine art paper, I use Ilford Smooth Pearl. Even this paper should last 25 years when printed on the R2400 according to its manufacturer.

Re: Which fine art papers do you recommend?
Right Iv'e decided to the the 3800
Sooo
now I need some papers and so looking at this thread - I find I not much the wiser
I can see the Velevt etc is top notch but when just starting out, with a view to getting good enough to print of the Velvet fine art and somerset etc that martin uses , where should i start, matt, cgloss, semi gloss, epson hahnemule etc
Aggh too many to choose from but I know I don't want to start with somethigtoo far away fromwhere I want to end up
So first things first - would I be right in p[resuming that Velevt fine art somerset and other fine art papers for B+W are matt?
If so what matt papers should I start with and if not what shuld I look at?
thanks

Re: Which fine art papers do you recommend?
Ok Simon, velvet rag papers are expensive and would suggest you use a cheaper paper to start with as printing is a learning curve, I would recommend first you go to Eric chan's site http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/abwprofiles.html
Download all the profiles that are there and save them for future usage.
also read what he has to say about using the 3800, this MAN knows his stuff.
Now for paper I would use Espons Archival matt paper used in conjunction with Eric Chans profile for that paper, the results are excellent, what you need to do is follow Chans instructions of how to print using the 3800, the settings he recommends in the ABW printer dialogue box, the settings to use in PS, his profiles are better than the ones that are canned with the epson, once you get a good feel and workflow for printing mono then and only then move to the more expensive rag fine art papers
Martin
