Re: Printing FAQs
Well to b honest Simon, to get exactly what you see on screen, your whole system needs calibrating, screen and printer profiling, the problem with that is it cost a fortune to get it done.
Best advice I can give is :
Calibrate your screen, use only Epson Genuine inks and papers, and use there canned profiles you wont go far wrong. If you use other manufactures papers, get there paper profiles, then experiment in the printer media box with different media settings for best results. but do try the Eric Chans custom profiles for Fine art papers there really good and free

Re: Printing FAQs
COLOUR SPACE question
everywhere I reaqds that to print you need to convert to sRGB or you'll get washed out colours
I know thiis true for web viewing but what about for print?
What differences does it make what colour space you PRINT in?

Re: Printing FAQs
Its all to do with gamut, and depends what you want from the file. sRGB is certainly better for web images, Adobe RGB can looked washed out on web. Abobe RGB has a wider colour gamut, it pays to shoot in Adobe RGB, rather than shoot in sRGB then on comp convert to the adobe SPACE as you have not captured the wider colour spectrum Adobe can capture. As for printing, prints from sRGB will look fine but from Adobe RGB colour space better as the wider gamut fills the spaces left by sRGB. the modern desktop printer can print beyond the colour gamut of sRGB. Thats why most commercial printers like Adobe RGB or CYMK files to print with. Hope that clears it up for you, in short always shoot and print in Adobe RGB

Re: Printing FAQs
Thanks martin however you only mention Adobe RGB and sRGB, whereas I shhot RAW and convert in ACR or LR to Prophoto.
I was wondering whether when one converts and saves as TIFF (from a Prophoto.psd etc) whether you have to alter the colour profile or leave as is, for output to print?

ProPhoto colour space is fine, and converting to ProPhoto in sotware is still OK, but to shoot in sRGB then convert is wrong way round

sRGB is a very small colour space, You need to capture in as large a colour space as possible and then convert to sRGB for the web. For printing (providing your printer is profiled to suit) I suggest capture in Adobe RGB or ProFoto if you can (PP is larger than basic Adobe RGB) .

Re: Printing FAQs
Thanks guys - I read some of this before and had settled on shooting ALWAYS in RAW, then opening and editing always in Propohoto.
Then I would convert to sRGB for the web
However as I get closer to actually printing a pic or two I find I have conflicting info in my head about whether to leave in prophoto when outputting to print or whether it needs converting

Its all so confusing, about time the gurus simplfied it all, I once had a head of hair, it going quick because of it

Re: Printing FAQs
More questions:
Does the 3800 print 16bit under mac OS 10.4.11?
Martin, you often mention that for the sharpening (USM) to look right IN PRINT it often has to look overdone on screen.
Can you post some screen caps of what images look like on screen with an 100% crop from it as well as the full view for when you are actually printing them?
