What papers/inks to start on?

What papers should one start with for the 3800?

Presumably Epson, archival matt I guess for the best pics, but for testing and trying out , to get the hang of it. what's best that will give more than avaerage results?

And will one be likely to use more Matt or glossy black ink?
((I want to buy spare BW cartridges with the Papers)

And finally what papers to get for very very sunday best prints? Somerset velvet? something museo? - what are your recommendations?

thanks

Hello Simon
I only print gloss or semi gloss on the 3800.
Da Vinci and Innova neutral and warm tone work very very well (they might actually be the same paper).
I've only tried the Platinum EG at A2 and I've had some problems with curl - although the image quality is very good.
Can't help you on the Matt - I still use a 2100 and Hahnemuelle photo rag.

Hope that helps

John

For colour i use Hahnemuhle German etching exclusively but for mono I've spent a while canvassing opinions and looking at samples / other work and I've settled on Fotospeed Platinum Gloss, (the matt GE does not give nearly enough depth of black).

I only use photo black ink because it wastes far too much ink in my printer to swap.

I am, as yet, to use the new paper in earnest. Hope i don't get the curling problems John reports.

For printing mono, the best paper for me is Epson Velvet Fine Art. It's similar to Somerset Velvet but the latter has much less texture. As Martin says, Museo Max is also a fine paper but VFA has a higher dmax (1.74)which means crisper tones, brighter whites and more visible detail in the blacks.
If you printed an image on all 3 papers and compared them side by side you'd see what I mean. Epson VFA is superior if you can live with the textured surface.

When printing monochrome with the 3800, always use the ABW driver instead of RGB drivers and make sure you use the custom profiles by Eric Chan in the link that Martin sent you above. Just download them (they're free) and install them.

Here's some great reading about fine art papers for monochrome printing. Check out this link to learn more about it.

Can't seem to find Epson Velvet fine art anywhere - have they changed its name?

Not that I'm aware of, Simon. For what it's worth, the Epson Somerset Velvet (St. Cuthberts) is the same paper without the texture, in fact, I prefer it to Epson FAV because of that. It's not available here in Canada unfortunately but Epson Fine Art Velvet is in plenty of abundance.
