Just a thought keep at it
Digital is great but has one major disadvantage for amatuers and thats cost, doing images on a comp screen is fine until somthing goes wrong, might be as simple as the tones go all whishy washy or more severe a hard drive failure and no back up, there gone, to complete the hobby printing out the captured, edited image is like in the darkroom days very satisfying thing to see and a complete finish to your hobby, darkroom days are getting less and less i suppose now but the advantage they had was your output quality was as good if not better than the pros and certantly better than labs, but today we are restricted by ouir pocket good printers cost wad fulls, inks are expensive, so here we are witrh a stunning picture only to print it out on our cheapish inkjet and the dissapointment is awful, no contrast, colour cast that changes the by day and night and it can make you feel like packing it up in BW, but dont ,do your images in mono save and back up cause prices are droping all the time,eg, i bought a 1 gig high speed compact flash last week cost £46, 2 years ago the same would have been £250, so the printers that can give us nuetral no metorizing images are getting within reach as manufactures relize mono is a big big part of photography still, and belive me when they start poping out of the printer as good nearly as darkroom prints your realy bitten and the hobby doubles in pleasure , plus you can start to sell a few, {labs cant even produce decent BW even today to automated set for colour} i find it frustrating with my epson although it does produce excellant images i know for a fact that done on a £3000 printer they would be even better, but i enjoy the thrill of the print so got to be patiant and mine and your own images are all sat waiting there until the ultimate printer arives at a affordable price

Re: Just a thought keep at it
I agree. I don't print all of my things but when I think something is different or of a standard I like to print it and hold it.
Recently I have got into the habit, since being a member here, of printing small 100x150mm to get a fee of what it will look like before I launch off on something bigger.
I appreciate it's expensive but when has photography ever been a cheap hobby?
I currently use the Epson photo 2100 with the double black inks.

Re: Just a thought keep at it
Graham i agree with you on the small prints, what i do is buy A3+ sheets but also A4, i do test prints at 7x5 on the A4 can get two out of one sheet which is usualy enough to tell me where to alter and improve on the output and when im happy with the tests i then commit to the final A3, just a word on sharpening you should try Glen Mitchels pro sharpening scripts there spot on and the output sharpen although on screen may look to much it realy does a good job on the print, if not any of his work got to his site thelightsright.com and download the free script

Re: Just a thought keep at it
Thanks for that I never thought of doing 7 x 5 using A4.
What paper do you use?
I have been using Epson A3 and super A3 archival matt and premium semi gloss but I read on a site recently that Epson Enhanced Matt is far superior.
Do you have any thoughts?

Re: Just a thought keep at it
As far as i know enhanced matt is in fact archival matt paper but you need to download the enhanced matt profile from epson but still use archival matt paper, it is deff better this way as well, i use mainly archival matt with the enhanced matt printer profile, i find it gives deep rick blacks and super tonal range plus a nice texture, the other papers i use are the fine art rags such as somerset velvet matt, epson velvet matt the prob with these there very expensive to buy and comparing these with archival matt i like the look of the thinner cheaper paper, believe me in a frame with glass you cant tell the differece as to quality and thickness, maybe bachs or crimbo, karl would comment on what they look like matted and framed

Re: Just a thought keep at it
Millers (Mpix.com) here in the States has a special 'true black and white' process that gives much better results than anything I've seen elsewhere. Definitely better than what I've seen from consumer inkjet jobs. I've toyed with the idea of printing my own, but I have to admit that my fascination with color and color management would lead down a very expensive road that leads far, far away from mono.

Re: Just a thought keep at it
Stick with the lab frank for mono, if you dont print a lot of monos and you can find a good lab for the odd one then its prob the best root in money terms although the thrill of producing your own work from start to finish is lost

Re: Just a thought keep at it
Most of what I've seen printed with a consumer grade inkjet plain sucks. It sucks as bad as what I've seen from most labs that print b&w in color. As far as completing my work from start to finish, using them is like "borrowing" their equipment - they use my color settings, so my bad prints are my fault.

Re: Just a thought keep at it
It was a shame to put glass over Martins' print.
I loved the matt texture of the paper.
I used to do a lot of watercolour painting and I used to love the texture of the watercolour paper so framed them without glass back in the mad days when I used to make my own frames.

Re: Just a thought keep at it
I just bought some A4 Ilford Smooth Fine Art Paper and printed a portrait I took in B&W, and I am very pleased with it...I have an HP 8450.
