Lakes Old Building
Well I tried posting my version of this in the 'Old building' monthly comp but Im not happy with it and I wondered whether others could give m,e some pointers as to wehere Im going wrong?
Here's the original first, with my colour 'master' version that I converted to BW next, and my BW version under that.
Full size version of original here
I realise the original is one stop underexposed. My colour 'master' is how I found it to give the best sky but I did this for BW conversion, if I was going to use it just for colour I would actually do it differently
What I wanted was the church (or whatever it is) to really stand out with the look that te sun is raking hard on it, but to get the mood by having the surrounding areas more interesting.
What I don't like about this is:
1-some stones on the church are blown out
2-the clouds have masses of noise ( which I have disguised i lightroom) - so do some areas of sky - not sure why
3-the grass on the left side is messy (oversharpened? or too bright/contrasty?
All in all I just can't get the 'look' right and have alreadu spent hours on it in photoshop
NB: I dont have the BW pro or other programs that Martin uses, just photoshop CS4
thanks

I did and felt the same with my Cormac's Chapel. With only about 3MB of original colour image, I didn't have much to work on.

Yes- I had exactly the same result, and:
I cloned over various blown out stones.
I blurred the noisy sky, but it now looks too defocused.
The chapel looks a bit too much in the spotlight of the sun.

Me too, again. I just had Martin's CD at the weekend. Using Mac OS, I can't have all the plugins. Also I keep lots of adjustment layers rather than merge layers because I don't expect to be certain of the results. I think we have to leave it for a few days and try again if still bothered, and find some inspiration - maybe tone down the building's brightness and sharpen some clouds.

Re: Lakes Old Building
Better than the first one in that it has deeper tones in the lower mid areas
Simon
I would not panic about it so to speak, I think you have done a good job here.
The thing to remember is this, in landscape photography you have to pick the right light and time of day to get the dramatic pictures and that is not always easy if your just on a day out, the last two images I put up here where taken not by chance but more planned, I could see what the weather was offering in terms of light, i also new where the Sun was setting and the location, all I needed was the right conditions and of I went and got the shots,
If your picture was not planned and just a shot from a visit in the country you done a darn good job of it IMHO
Maybe one thing that might be bothering you and that is the position of the little building maybe to central, try cropping and move it to the left a bit, see if that further improves

Re: Lakes Old Building
Thanks Martin, yes it was just a day out, walking with my brother (in the doorway) and 8 others, I had to grab shots when I coiuld.
I have decided to stop using LR for adjustments, (except en masse) I find I get better results from ACR.
To do with visualisation again, nothing wrong with LR. I just find that I think of ACR as part of photoshop and it affects the way I think (wierd huh?)
I'll try a different crop as well martin, thanks
EDIT: different crop - thoughts?
