What would you do?
Several years ago I had to make the decision whether or not to have my own web site. Having failed to answer the question "why?", I decided the real answer was "why not?". I didn't understand code, but with help from my husband the first site was up and running in a few weeks. I liked it, but it was rather two dimensional and with an upcoming exhibition, I needed something bigger. On to version two, still built in code with frames, only this time it took several months to resolve the problems (and not in an elegant way). I love the way the site looks because it's individual to me, but it's a nightmare to change. I need 3 image files and 4 html files for each photograph, plus I need to change another 3 html files.
We're trying to do version three, but in style sheets this time, only this time it's taken a year and we're still stuck on scrolling thumbnails that are centred at one screen resolution, but not at another. Even if we solve this, there are still issues with things not looking good at different screen resolutions and I'm not getting any younger!
All advice seems to be build your own site if you can and stay away from Flash, but I've just found some really good templates on Allwebcodesign. They're designed for photographers and seem to have all the functions that I need - plus I can change anything about the site in minutes.
The truth is that I'm torn. I'm very attached to my own site, but is it worth the grief? The site is for my own satisfaction, although I'm getting about 45 new visitors a day - never any sales though. Also, I have top ranking in Google with one particular search phrase and I'm worried I may lose that place if I'm not careful. I guess it's not important without the sales, but if I ended up with no visitors the site would seem pointless.
Any advice appreciated

Re: What would you do?
I agree, but since I've been scanning some old film I have a backlog that I want to add to the web site. I could do with taking some old stuff down too. The trouble is that it's just too difficult, so I don't bother. The thing is beginning to stagnate. If I'm adding an image I need to copy another file that is in the same category, in the same orientation and the same (as in colour or B&W). I then have to copy all the tags and descriptions to four different html files and change the order in another three. Then I have to create three images - one for the thumbnails, one for the fake slide and one for the fake frame. I did say it wasn't elegant!

Re: What would you do?
If just want a site to exibit your work why not give Smugmug a try, great to use and very reliable, any size image can be uploaded, cheap for a year as well

Re: What would you do?
You're probably right there, but I took advice from a friend to stop them being pinched. I like having a site and if I had one that worked well it might just encourage me to get out and take some more photographs.
Oh... by the way Martin, apart from the partially severed finger, I spent all day in A&E yesterday with a suspected fractured ankle. Thank heavens it's not broken, but it will stop me getting out for another week or so

Re: What would you do?
I love the filmstrip thumbnails.
That's the plus side but I think the thumbnails are bigger than the image (Certainly in some cases) and I'd like to see the images bigger.
You may be worried about theft but if you went to 600 pixels wide then there's only a 2.5 inch print to be stolen so not much to worry about.
I use Clikpic and am delighted with the service they provide for the cost, which can be as little as £30 a year. If you transferred yur site to them the Google bot would get confused for a while on the change of directory structure which would inevitable result but your ranking, which depends in part, on the length your site has been on the web should be retained. (I found this out after I switched sites )
Clikpic offer lots of different styles, thumbnails are auto generated and you would save lots and lots of time getting your site going leaving you free to take more pictures.

Re: What would you do?
Thanks for your input Martin and Bill. It's really appreciated. I've just had a long soak in the bath (to help the huge bruise and swelling on my ankle) and I've decided to go for it! The old site has been up for a couple of years and I can always save a copy for myself. I now have ideas for a brand new look and you're right... I need to be out taking more pictures, not stuck indoors struggling with code. I'm more than happy to go with bigger images. I've actually given some of mine away in the past. If people ask then it makes me happy - I just don't like stealing. I guess you can't stop it though and it's not worth worrying about a little print. I'm off to create a new image!
