Re: What would you do?
Unless you gt your ISP to point your old site to the Smugmug one you will lose all the site history and ranking based upon that.

Re: What would you do?
Thank you, but I decided to go with the Allwebcodesign template in the end. I actually love tinkering with code when it's working, it's just the endless problems I can't handle. So far I'm very pleased with what they've sent, although the logo I designed myself has a habit of dropping off
I have a feeling it's something to do with the document statement because it works all the time in Firefox, but not in IE7. Hopefully that will be fixed tonight

Re: What would you do?
Hi Little Zooey,
A couple of years ago, like you I took the DIY route to creating my website, using Notepad & html. Life became easier when I discovered Kompoze (freeware web design programme). Unlike yours, mine is not 100% photography, subject-wise but when I wanted to expand the photographic content, I added links from my photography pages to a separate Gallery (using the Gallery database via http://gallery.menalto.com/), held on my own webspace. Gallery allows as many albums, sub-albums etc as you have web space for and there are many options either built-in or via plug-ins. Uploading an image at 1024 x 683 pixels, Gallery will create thumbnails, 800 x 600 and other sizes that you specify. The available album formats could not be described as 'flash' or 'glitzy' but they are easy on the eye, do not distract (or even detract) from the image content and navigation is straightforward.
I have (fairly briefly) looked at 'pre-prepared' solutions such as Smugmug and Clikpic but as I already have my own domain, decided to keep the current status quo. After all, it is purely for my own interest and I make no attempt to sell images (which is a good job, as whereas there are many 'views' recorded by Gallery, no-one has ever requested a full-size image or print).
Good luck with making your changes!
PS - I recently spent the princely sum of UKP9.99 on Serif's WebPlus 10 web design programme with the intention of revamping my main web pages but have yet to find a page template that really appeals.

Re: What would you do?
Thank you for the additional information. Like you, I have my own domain and it makes sense to hang on to it. Having spent the past two days snowed in at home, I've been working on the new site and I've been very impressed with the Allwebco template. The problem I had with jpg images dropping off seems to be an IE7 problem and once I'd uploaded the files they started working again.
I also don't like flashy sites and I've stripped this one back a bit. It should be finished in the next couple of weeks and then I'm going out to take some NEW PHOTOGRAPHS!!
