Is my lens soft?

I am really worried that my new lens struggles with focus (Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 EX DG). I took the attached photo at f4.4 at 160th / 60mm.

When I zoom in, it doesn't look very sharp. I have loads of photos like this - is it operator error? I would really apreciate any comments.

PS. I know the photo's only a happy snap but I wanted something straightforward for you to look at.

2 images side by side - scroll down to view.

Thanks
Steve

Re: Is my lens soft?

The 24-60 is one of the better Sigmas and does OK in the reviews.

OK, 3 questions

Did you manual focus or use Auto Focus ?

Is the sharp bit always on the: left/right/top/bottom? [Lens not square]

If you used auto focus - Is the sharp bit always in front of or behind the bit you thought you were focussing on. If you used auto focus it is likely that it is back or front focussing. In Sigmas case they usually back focus
