Chris since both my lens go to f32 I have been asking myself the same question.Why would manufactures such as Canon Nikon etc bother.I'm wondering if my eyes are telling me the truth.Regards Max

Same reason as for many of the "Faults" in cameras, they manufacture what the mass market require. The "mass market" has little real knowledge of the details of photography....

I could go on but had better not.

I agree that they hardly need to stop down that much, but it quickly lets you use a longer shutter exposure when you may not need ultimate resolution. Also many of these lenses can be used on "full frame", ie 36x24mm sensor cameras as well as on DX sensor cameras, so f/22 or so may be useful at times. In practice I use aperture priority at about f/6.3 for almost everything. Gordon

Hmmm, I had better take more technical notice of what Im doing out in the field as this makes sense to me ( just lsistened to his podcast)

Trouble is martin has got me stuck on f22 and shooting into the sun!

these two are on the 11-22 Oly at 11mm with the routine sharpen in Capture One 4

So the theory works...the DoF we expect from our lenses is different on a cropped sensor than 35mm film for the same lens aperture... and I would extend that the other way to medium format... so I understand f32 on legacy lenses...
Now if you have a pocket compact with a very small sensor ... see what the min aperture is..

The interesting thing about the pod cast is thar he is a pro photog and uses only full frame sensors.As for sorting this out on pocket compacts...... emoticon
