Blending Multiple Exposures (Without HDR Tools)

Below is a link to a zip file that contains three different exposures of the same scene.

The scene is natually high in contrast: The bright sun behind the clouds, the dark trees behind the white barn and the grassy area in the forground.

The challenge is to maintain, even enhance, this natural contrasts while avoiding those nasty halos caused by USM (local contrast enhancements), sharpening and sloppy layer masking. Also, we must be careful to preserve the midtones to keep a nice balance between the blacks and whites.

If you prefer, you can simply use only the longest and shortest exposures. I actually used the center exposure for most of the sky, using the short exposure to take out the blown highlights.

Anyway, let's see what you can do!!!
Here's the link to the 13mb zip file...
Download File

The file will be available for 7 days or 100 downloads. After that, send me a PM and I'll get the file to you asap.

Here's my attempt...

At present the link does not work

You were considering a time limit and if you are worried about your files proliferating then by all means do set one

Okay, I'm trying a new service (yousendit.com). It looks pretty good. The file will be available for 7 days or 100 downloads, whichever comes first.

I've edited the origional post to change the link. Please try again and let me know.

Thanks,
-Andy

Chris, I use the brush tool like you would use a spray gun you have to shade it into the horizon plus as you work down from the top of the sky gradually reduce the brush opacity, don't go to dark between the land and sky, also keep USM away from the edges using a mask, don't let the tress go to full black , there's detail there so keep it, if you go to full black then the likely hood of halo will increase

Wow Martin! Very nicely done! Not a halo to be found, and thanks for the extra lesson. I understand what you are telling us and the concept seems simple enough, but I still find trouble executing sometimes.

I really like the smooth tone transitions in the sky as well. I'm really excited to try this one again now! Thanks so much for doing this..
