Light retrieval, lets see what you can do with this file

The colour pic is default straight from raw, but by doing a multi raw edit, and sharpening tech, its amazing what digital can capture, by shooting into the light under exp has occurred, but gives a moody shot.
Any one wants a go at this i will put the raw file up for download ,you got till 12th Jan to download the file, download it while its there and try later if you want

Re: Light retrieval

Ok the file is here for download

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=6EB71C566EC59E73

As fer as editing goes its all on this link

http://www.digital-monochrome.co.uk/page1796.html

The difference in the tutorial and the edit with the car is I had only one raw file to work with so it all goes to extremes of light and when you finally get into the image and open that black area all sorts of problems can start, banding, noise oil slicks the lot, so you need to be very careful in what you do, building the picture slowly, best of luck emoticon

Hi Martin,

As you mentioned the problem is the noise etc.. in the shadow area's, apart from working carefully do you startoff getting already max light out of your RAW-convertor ? (this causes the first tiff file to contain already noise) or creat a first better (noise-less) .tiff and try to gradually add light later on in the process ? (I hope I make sense, tried both with not much effect yet..)

thanks Leon

I know exactly what your saying Leon, its very badly underexposed and that's what noise loves, although one cant be expected to produce a stunning image with all tones its a way of trying to build an image slowly, i think you have down very well, the problems is getting as much mid range to show as to many oil slick areas make it look mucky in appearance, stick at and try to think how it would look as a print keeping in mind the total non informational black areas would be jet black on paper, keep checking your info palette if, get the darkest areas to around 12 this assures there is information there.

Thanks Martin, the upper part and car look fairly allright to me but the lower-part needs a lot more work still (this small 800 px version might look resonable but in my original sized file it looks bad and indeed unprintable !!). So keeping a printed version in mind I'll start working on that.. Cheers, Leon
