BookEnds
There are a couple of recent books that really hold up either end of the book shelf in level of difficulty and technique.
The book you should get is The Creative Digital Darkroom
This starts at the beginning on what digital images are, then how to capture them, tone and contrast, exposure control, colour correction and lots of creative stuff.
It is the book you need to tell you all those little 'how do you do's for PS.(how to change the background colour around the image) Based on CS3 it mentions the alternatives for earlier versions.
But it is not just for beginners as it discusses blending modes with empty layers and sharpening with gaussian blur...get it
The second book just breaks the rule I try to live by - KISS (keep it simple stupid) It is Welcome to Oz: A Cinematic Approach to Digital Photography
This book hurts my head...How to create studio lighting in PS, monochrome using R, G and B layers and masking to varying degrees to blend RGB to get the tone you want...most of us may sensibly steer clear of this book to avoid headaches...on the other hand...the images are just wonderful
