HDR imaging...

I am not into re-inventing the wheel so here is a link to the New York Times website...it explains what HDR imaging is...
New York Times HDR article
also very useful info at Vanilla Days
=========
Basically it is all about squeezing the full range of luminosity out of a scene. You may find this info from another link in the forum...
Full Dynamic Range methods
=========
If you see a lot of colour in this section do not worry as you will discover elsewhere that you have to get your colour image right first

Re: HDR imaging...

My preferred HDR program is Photomatix but do not let sway you there is always WebHDR
 that works over the internet.

If you downloaded Martins Lakeland image then you can use the RAW file to produce 3 jpegs at -2/0/+2 on exposure
Image
You can see that these images show detail in the highlights and shadows not easy to see in the basic image produced by RAW conversion
So using Photomatix to combine these 3 images you can get this
Image

Now that has a bit of tone to convert into monochrome and here is an example from me

Re: HDR imaging...

So how many files do you need for a HDR image?
Above I used one of Martins RAW images and made three jpegs from it at different exposures but a whole RAW image has so much more data!

Image
Image

Clockwise from top left :-
as it comes out of the Photoshop Raw Converter
a manipulation of the Raw file
HDR single Raw file
HDR three Raw files at -2/0/+2

So many choices...but dont become a slave to a method...learn the methods and use the most appropriate.

(The lazy way is to take the 3 Raws at -2/0/+2 and then the HDR or Martins multi Raw method is open to you)

Re: HDR imaging...

Hi,

I was intrigued with Chris's image "POTW ~ 31 ~ 07". I'd never heard of HDR imaging before and as the lakeland conversion looks stunning I thought I'd give it a go.

I've downloaded the trial version of Photomatix had a mess with a few of my RAW files but the skies don't seem to work ;0(

In the above example it say that the Lakeland example is available to down load. Could you please point me to it so that I could have a go and hopefully end up with a similar result.

Hi Riv...once you have had a play put up a link to one of your RAW files so I can have a go...there is much in Photomatix that draws out differences in tone and hence can add noise...which I like. Do look at other HDR resources as they may fit your style better...
eg FDR tools
and if cash is no object Idruna
and there is QTpfsGUI
and obviously there is WebHDR...
But once you Tone Map...noise will creep in

Hi Chris,

I'm a bit puzzled ?
The image that appeared on my posting seem to be a bit washed out compared to my original !

Strange !!!!
