One Day Workshop

Martin is now available to give one to one tuition to anyone who wants to learn the art of mono from editing and printing "the full workflow" using the Contrast Grading method.

Edit your images in a relaxed and fully equipped environment, two computers both with Photoshop software making the whole experience very interactive and enjoyable. The workshop covers the entire digital process, from Raw file to print output on large format printers. There is also a selection of fine art papers to choose and use. You can also view framed and matted fine art prints by Martin, this will give you a feel and idea of how a good monochrome print can look from digital output, and at the same time, hopefully inspire.

Over the past few years I have worked on a simple but very effective way to produce BW images that look great on the web but also in print, this is based on simplicity in use and not technically mind blowing. Basically its formulated from traditional wet dark-room methods and transferred to the digital process. The basic theory is Contrast Grading throughout, the process cuts out unnecessary destructive dodge and burn and the formulation of halos, all of which can ruin the overall look of images. Contrast Grading retains all highlight and shadow detail, giving a wider range of tones, which in turn produces better printout. Photoshop is used as the engine to drive certain plug-ins that effectively create Contrast Grading, although plug-ins are not essential to Contrast Grade, they do make it easier to convert the colour master file to mono. You will be shown what plug-ins to get and how to use them. Don’t worry about forgetting any parts of the process as you will receive the Contrast Grading tutorial video as part of the workshop package, you will also receive the theimagingfactory Pro, convert to black and white plug-in, FREE.

The Days’ workshop

The day will start with a brief talk on the mornings activity, viewing of my large selection of printed finished and framed Fine Art images, this will give a practical feel for the art.

All you have to bring is a selection of your own Raw files that you would like to work on, a selection of around ten files would be adequate, they can be any subject, landscape, still life, portraits etc.

When the edits are completed we will then go through the printing process and print your pictures to A3+ centered on fine art paper. Usually 3 prints can be fully processed and printed on different paper types. You will also be able to burn the master colour files and the edited mono images to disc for future reference.

The day is a complete tutorial of how a Black and White photographer and printer works, how he can visualize the scene in grey-tones and apply the image to paper with artistic taste.

What you get

Expert advice derived from years of experience in monochrome

You will go home with up to three A3+ prints.

The edited images burnt to disc for your own future use and reference.

The Contrast Grading CD including the acclaimed plug in "B&W PRO

Hot Lunch and drink

Once you arrive, chill out and let Martin do all the work, the day will start from 9.00am and aim to finish around 5pm

The cost for one day tuition will be £250.00

Attendees will need to make their own arrangements for travel, breakfast and evening meal.

Re: One Day Workshop

Hello Forummembers,

Last week I was so fortunate to be able to visit Martin in Leeds and spend a lovely (albeit rainy) one-on-one day in the Yorkshire Dales.

What can I say ?

It's a real treat to see the man work !

As a photographer; "Chasing the light"
It all seems to come natural to him; composition, technique, catching the right moment; he doesn't seem to think about it, it all appears to function just by intuition !

As a painter; "Enhanching the light"
Behind the computer screen he becomes a painter, this is amazing to see; using brushes certain areas of the image develop their own appearance..
At the end the overall look is a perfect monochrome image, you wouldn't believe it when you first saw the RAW file !

Printing the final result; "The final goal, recorded light for display"
Like a surgeon every detail of the image is carefully evaluated and finetuned till the result suits his expectations, not one single clogged-up black will remain..

This may sound like I've seen some untouchable magician at work but on the contrary ! The bottom line is this;
He's a very kind and "down to earth" man and the techniques used are actually very simple, totally different from what I used uptil now !
It's my goal now to practise these techniques and hopefully bring my monochrome photography to a higher level; all ingredients are there thanks to this one day course I took.

By the way; I stayed the whole week in the Dales, incredible landscape, fully recomend a visit to this region too !!!

I know I'm very fortunate to be able to do have done this one-on-one, but I really want to respectfully point out to you all; If you can find the means this is a great way to invest your money (even better than buying yet another lens or so!),

Cheers,

(and to Martin, thanks again !!!)

Leon

Hi, I stayed in the Dalesway Hotel in Ilkley.. Although rather simple I enjoyed it very much (friendly, calm atmosphere) and not too expensive... Due to circumstances the last night of my visit I stayed in the Best Western in Ilkley, much more luxurious and expensive, but beautifuly located underneath the "Cow and Calf Rocks". Cheers, Léon

Re: One Day Workshop

Hi to all

I have had a wonderful day today when I met up with Martin for one of his workshops. A nicer person you could not meet.
I arrived early, 07:30 and he was already waiting to start the day. Covering everything from the taking stage to the printing was a real eye opener for me. Nothing was to much for him I have learnt so much I hope I am soon putting it into practice.
For me Martin dispelled all the 'mystery' of achieving those fabulous mono photographs we see and admire so much.
I can only echo the comments of those others fortunate enough to have spent the day on the workshop.
Thank you Martin for a fabulous day.

Cheers
Jim
