Cropping
You say not to crop until all workis finished and I understand the reasons
However for me , sometimes it is very difficult to visualise the end product unless the crop is there, so: considering that Lightroom does NON-DESTRUCTIVE crops would it still work if you opened in photoshop from LR with LR crop, i.e would the registration still be p[erfect or is that simply not a possible avenue to go down?

To be honest Simon I don't know as I never use my version of LR,
I think it is all about applying a different thought pattern on this, when I first started converting to mono I soon realized that you have to build an image, not globally but in parts, I usually start from the top and work down in 3 parts, sky, mid and lower ground, this has helped me and others I have given live tutorials to.
So you say you cant visualize unless your image is cropped, your working backward IMHO.
Start by getting the picture right, a good conversion, good tones, contrast and texture, then the fun really starts in deciding how or if to crop, a finished conversion is easier to visualize better for cropping when you can see it that way.
The other alternative is to make a master colour file, get the crop right on that, then convert, wrong way round but might help your vision
