Canon 100~400L

Another of my fav lens, mine is a sharpe copy as I have heard there are the odd bad ones out there, so try one before you buy. Build quality is as expected for L quality, superb, comes with hood and carry case, the lens is not over heavy, the zoom action is push and pull, takes a bit of getting used to and becomes second nature after a while, you can alter the zoom restriction by tightening it if needed, it is IS capable, two modes, on normal and the other for panning.

How does it do optical, well it is amazing, the detail it captures is really good. can be slow at times to lock on focus but once it does it stays there, [talking A1 servo].

I use this lens a lot for my cyclingimages, the only thing that is restrictive is the f5.6 max AP, but to counter that I just up the ISO on dull days.

Its also a great landscape lens where speed don't matter, it pulls distant subjects with ease and the zoom range gives a lot of flexibility.

If you want the ultimate quality then fixed is the way to go , but slightly lower IQ from this lens is compensated for its usability, when I shot sports the capture rate is better than fixed because of the ability to keep zooming out and not losing the subject.

The lens IS system is awesome, i can hand hold at 400mm at 1/125 sec and get sharpe shots, a big bonus.

This is a lens I would highly recommend.

Martin

I agree, a great lens. I use mine for landscape occasionally and sport (mostly motorsport). AF is quick in good light and stabiliser is excellent as Martin said.

I've taken my time on this one, reading lots of reviews on Sigmas 'Bigma' and the 100-400L

Martins review backs up what I've read elsewhere andI've ordered mine today!
