Some really Bad News

I haven't been posting much lately and the reason being is that I've been diagnosed with a rare form of glaucoma which has left me visually impaired in one eye and yesterday I found out that the other eye has become affected as well. The doctors aren't sure what has caused this but believe this condition is "systemic" in other words related to another underlying medical condition that I have that has yet to be diagnosed. They can't tell me at this point if any permanent damage has been done by this condition but are treating it very aggressively to stave off permanent blindness using eye medications and probably surgery if it is deemed a viable solution. This is not something I would ever have thought would happen to me in a million years especially with my love for photography and the visual world and all its beauty, I think I could deal with losing my hearing, but losing my eyesight is going to be tough to deal with.
I will remain hopeful that this condition can be treated and promise to keep you all informed as more news become available. I am seeing another eye specialist next week and hopefully he will have some better news for me.

Below is one of my favorite images from 2008 and I've attempted to simulate what my world looks like at this point.

News does not come much worse. emoticon

My mother lost most of her sight in her later years (due to smoking, which made the walls of the veins brittle in her eyes and continual bleeds smashed up the retina). Despite this she kept her independence and learned to cook, make tea and coffee (with gadgets to aid her) etc. She was never too keen on cleaning emoticon so with a positive attitude she adapted and still enjoyed life. If it comes to it I hope you will be able to do the same BUT I hope and pray that the treatment works and you fare better than perhaps you now fear.

I'm sure you have a lot of friends on here and we will all be rooting for you.

Oh Steven, i am so so sorry to hear this, and feel for you at this time, sight is so precious to us all, whether we be photographers or not. We all take what we have for granted at times, and although I have never meet you I feel as though I know you personly as a fellow photog and friend. This post brings me down to earth. Thankfully we live in times where surgeons, doctors etc have knowledge and access to wonderful treatments with great success rates, I wish you a speedy and successful recovery from this.

WE need you on this forum to give us inspiration from you wonderful images, long may it continue.
Martin

Hi Steven ... you probably have a long and rocky road ahead of you but if we can hold your hand and help you along through this forum than just ask...
I wish you luck and hope your docs come to their conclusion soon...
You may think it crass of me to say 'do not give up on photography' but try not to ... it will be hellishly difficult and more frustrating but it will still reward you in its way ... and thank you for your images so far
 good luck

Hello Steven

We haven't spoken much but I've enjoyed your images and comments on the forum the short time I have been active.
The sense of sight is for me the primary sense and the most important, so I feel for your anxiety. However the medics have said that it is systemic; let's hope that they find the root cause soon and you'll be able to provide your expert and inciteful comments and great imagery as before.

Good luck

John

A firend of mine had his vision suddenly go and a minor stroke was diagnosed. His sight is returning ok , Hpefully whatever they find is causing yours will also be something that will recover in time.

I don't know how I missed this thread but this dreadful news.

I hope the docs lead you to a full recovery which will make you and us all appreciate the special gift of sight.
