This (beer) boy is trying to man-up!

After reading some of the threads on liquor on this and dh1, I always wondered what about bourbon and whiskey and bourbon whiskey you fellas were so enamoured with. Well, I decided recently to man up and dive head long into the deep end of the pool by starting a bourbon/ whiskey tasting regimine. I still love my beer, mind you, but I decided that you ****s wouldn't just drink any old **** and start raving about it, that you must rave because you really enjoy the stuff. You see, that is alien to me in a way because I've never liked any liquor unless it was mixed with something like a rum AND coke, a gin AND tonic--- you get my drift. So this was a big decision for me so everytime I go out now I try a different shot.

You see this has been a long time coming. My father's always said I'm not sophisticated enough, to which I respond that I know enough that Jack Daniels should be used exclusively for cleaning wounds as it smells the same as rubbing slcohol. So the argument went... But recently, I've seen all the grown-ups drinking liquor and I decided enough! I have to man-up. Am I a man, or a mouse. Initially, I was a mouse and truth be told, I'm still a little mousy in this endeavor but the point is I'm trying.

So I jumped into the deep end with Knob Creek. I started cutting it with a little tonic until Scuff told me I was still a pussy and that that was no different than beer. But he did say that I could chase it with a beverage of my choice; SO, that's what I've been doing. Knob Creek chased with ginger ale. Nice flavor. Have to let it sit on the tongue a little and it's pretty smooth. Next was a shot of Jack at happy hour last week. Loved the smokey flavor and again I chased it with ginger ale, although not after every sip of Jack. Jack had a little bite, tho. Next, I tried the 1792. Chased it with coke this time. Liked that, too. Very smooth and not much bite. I like the no/ little bite.

So this weekend I went out with my buddy who's drink has always been Jack and coke. I told him my new endeavor so he drank his Jack and cokes and I tried a Maker's Mark. ****ing yummy. Really like the carmelly flavor, the small bite, and it's really nice chased with a little coke. BTW, I've been getting them neat so I could really get a handle on things w/o it being watered down with ice or water. Then I tried a shot of single barrel Jack with a ginger ale chaser. Dudes, I officially see what you mean about whiskeys. That **** was terrific. Rich, smokey, caramelly... yummy! Hardly even needed to touch the ginger ale. I went to buy myself a bottle today but at $45 a fifth, I got myself a Maker's Mark instead this time around.

So here I am enjoyin' my Maker's--- the first whiskey I've ever bought myself--- and a chaser of coke. My balls finally are sprouting some hair! emoticon

Not as long as you use the word "yummy," they ain't.

Seriously, you are on the right road. Way to go, dude. Today you are a man, my son. Try them all. No hurry. Find the one you like best and you got a lifelong compadre.

Cheers, buddy.

First off nice effort but why in the hell are you washing it down with ginger ale. I know teen age girls who wouldent stoop to this leavel. You love beer and nothing washes down a nice shot better than a cold one.

Also if you like the caramelly flavor maybe you should try Crown Royal or any blended Canadian wiskey.

Because beer doesn't allow for an appreciation of the bourbon. Once he appreciates the whole thing he can **** it up by drinking boiler makers. Until then - no beer as a chaser.

I agree about the ginger, though. I still do it with a diet coke sometimes. But it's not as manly, even though we're doing the same thing as someone who drinks it with ice. It all gets watered down. It takes a while to drink any hard liquor on its own.

No blended whiskeys. Too effete.

I drink Knob on the rocks, mostly As much as I'd like to classify myself as a afficiando, I still drink the **** to get my mind bent, and I have that inherently American notion that everything I drink should be cold, except coffee. However, I won't waver on the notion that you get what you pay for, and on really cold nights, when I'm stuck at home alone, a Knob neat is just what the doctor ordered. Gets me to the point where I start writing manifestos.....

Congrats, Weed. Now when you're at the saloon, you're a cut above the frat boys.

Reminds me of a god story. Me, and two co-workers were drinking at a bar a few weeks ago. Me and the one dude, are a bit more seasoned than the kid, who's all of 22, so we're downing suds and whiskey. The kid, after a few beers, feels it's time he mans up and drinks liquor with us, so he buys a round of shots. Some **** called a "Chuck Norris" with red bull and some cherry liqueuer. I tried refusing, as I have a "no energy drinks nor sub 80 proof" policy, but he pressed so we drank them. My buddy downs his, rolls his eyes, looks at the kid, and says, "What's next? Are we going to the local college on a panty raid?"

I almost pissed myself laughing.

We thanked the kid for the round, answered with our own rounds, and had him throwing up an hour later. Good times.

Nice, Slack. That right there is part of the reason I always teased my pops about Jack being for cleaning wounds... I drank nearly a fifth back in my early college years and had to sleep it off on a picnic table at my elementary school. I arrived home around 4:30 in the morning just before my dad got up for work so I was under the radar there but he had already caught me once in high school anyway so he knew I drank. After he left for work the vomiting began in earnest. Ever since, any whiskey reminded me of that terrible night of puking thru the table boards of that weather beaten picnic table. Yogi and Boo Boo probably had a feast the next morning.

I think I like Maker's Mark. Anybody tried anything that they think I should? And what the **** is the difference, taste-wise, with Scotch? Or do I need to do a taste test?

Ah, at last something to do on this most boring of Easters. I like makers Mark but I like Knob Creek better. Yesterday I bought a bottle of George ****el single barrel. I also like Bookers. All of these distillers (not brewers, mind you) are now making small batch bourbons, including Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Ridgemont, Blanton's , etc. The only thing to do is try them all. I'm starting to settle on Knob Creek. It's 100 proof and has a nice little burn. I like the taste and I really like how it settles my mind down. It really relaxes me. I'll still drink tequila, and in fact I just bought another bottle of Family Reserve. But I'm thinking now that as an American I ought to embrace that which we create here. And by God, nothing is as American as a bourbon. I'd like to try some Rye whiskey, too and a small distiller named Sazerac is putting out a small batch rye. But you have to try a bottle of them all and settle on your "go to" one. I'm giving the pending son-in-law a bottle of Knob Creek today cause he's going on a camping trip and wants to drink bourbon. Weed, we'll drink some ****el soon. Try some Evan Williams, too but these are not the high ends like Knob and Makers and Bookers. there's a lot out there. Gentleman Jack is supposed to be nice, too. I thought you were liking the 1792? You like Maker's Mark better? What about it do you like?

Scotch is completely different and is always smokey to one degree or another. There are hundreds of scotches. Some are light and some are dark and very smokey. They are an acquired taste, too but are not really comparable to the caramel, oak and vanillas of a good bourbon. Scotch is made from either malted or unmalted barley and is sometimes blended with other grains. A single malt is just that. It is aged for a minimum of 3 years in oak casks. Note that Scotch whisky is spelled "whisky." It has to be distilled in Scotland.

American whiskey (note the "e") is distilled from corn. if it is distilled from rye, it's called, well, "rye." A sug-group is tennessee whiskey which is further filtered through maple sugar charcoal. In American boubon there must be at least 51% corn or rye, if it's a rye.

There are Canadian whiskies, irish whiskies, scotch whiskies and even Japanese whiskies, but, you know . . .**** the Japs.

I say we have us a tasting.

The one I've liked the most is the single barrel Jack. Haven't tried the Gentleman Jack yet but the single barrel was dark and had no burn, which I liked. Very smokey and caramelly... I'd say yummy, but, well...emoticon

I was wondering if they had any of these in minis? You know, nips. But that might go against the American spirit of more being better, huh? Probably only fifths and larger.

I couldn't figure out what you meant. We called them miniatures. A ton of stuff is bottled in miniatures. I wouldn't be surprised - I've seen Patron tequila in minis. No reason why a fine bourbon wouldn't be. They are much higher in price, though,in relation to how much you get.

Please, dude. Don't say yummy. Or scrumptious, or anything spring-breakish or which would take away the inherent maleness of drinking bourbon. It just ain't right.

I second that motion. The only thing yummy we should consume is pussy.

And in Scuff and my case, it doesn't have to be that yummy. Or fresh.
