Okay, Tweed. Mission accepted. I just stopped in the liquor store, and eyeballed all the ryes, but I chickened out and went with Knob. What's a good rye? I noticed about a half-dozen of them, Sazerac Rye, Beam Rye, and some other's that looked shady. Give me a quality rye, and I'll report back.

Honestly, of the three I've tried, Sazerac Rye is my favorite, but Wild Turkey Rye and Beam Rye were both good too. Sazerac was better, tho. It had a little more of the caramel flavor I like but it's distinctly rye.

Okay, maiden voyage is with Jim Beam Rye. I've only had 1 glass, and I don't mind it. Not an abundance of flavors, IMO, but I put the first one on rocks. I'll try the next one neat, and actually analyze it.

Rye whiskey is good, Tweed. Did a little research on it, via Wiki, and discovered it's primarily distilled in the Northeast U.S. Figures. Anyways, I enjoy it, at least the Beam version. A lot mellower than bourbon, has what I'd call "a minty sensation" to it. Not minty at all, but it leaves a cleaner flavor on the palate. (I'm piss-poor at describing flavors like those ****ing wine-tasters do). Still has a high-octane feel to it, for the drunkard in me, and I could see this being my summer whiskey of choice. Think I'll stick to Knob for the hard winters, though. It builds character. Thanks for recommending it. emoticon

We think it's peppery rather than minty. I have learned that if you are drinking bourbons with ice, use a higher proof bottle. That way the ice won't dilute it so the flavor disappears.

Glad you liked it, dude. I've been told to keep it as add-in to like Jack and some other less flavorful choices. I like it on the rocks by itself, but I'm with you that I think it's lighter so a little better for the summer. I'm working my way thru some Knob now too. Really like it.

Last night I finished off a bottle of Knob Creek and then finished off a bottle of Bulleit. There's a definite difference. I think the Bulleit is a tad harsher than the KC.

Weed, are you talking about vatting?

Vatting? Don't know. That bourbon site suggested using rye to add-in to some of your not so favorite whiskeys. Like I tried mixing a little with Bulleit and liked it much better. I haven't done it with Knob but I did try it with Jack too and liked it a little more that way.

Couple things I do know is that Jack ain't my bag. I like regular Beam better. So in a pinch when I'm out, Beam is an alternative. I also like Old Grand Dad too. I'd like to try the 100 proof Bottled in Bond version.

I actually found the Old Grand Dad that Perry suggested the other day at the Parkville Shopping Center liquor store. It was $25.99. I think I'm going to try it. The bourbon site reviewers seem to like it...

Well, I bought the Old Forester 86 proof that they like, too, so we ought to be in good shape. Plus I got us a surprise.

Alright, so since finishing with my second round of South Beach, I treated myself to a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 year and Buffalo Trace. They are both really good. They both have that sweet caramel flavor but less of that oaky taste that Knob has. The Buffalo Trace may become my goto. At $21.99 a bottle it's right in the same price range as Knob.

I had hoped to enjoy it last night whilst posting here a but my PC had some issues that I had to deal with so I had a couple angry glasses while I dealt with them. It's a good bourbon.
