Re: Drinking
Coming from a family of cops, my old man always loved guns. I don't think he has but a couple originals but he's purchased a few kits and built guns himself that are beautiful. He's never shot them but assures me of their ability. He has them here and there throughout the house. He probably has ammo stashed in places too. Cracks me up. Brought me up to fear them rather than revere them so I never got into them...

Re: Drinking
Just the opposite here...grew up with guns. Dad was a hunter and taught me the ins and outs of guns and the safe handling of such. Got my first one, a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun when I was seven, started carrying a .22 at ten and a 20 gauge at 12. We had dogs growing up but they weren't pets, they were hunting dogs. Dad was a coon hunter and had two Black & Tans (Old Moses and Trix) to tree them. He sold them when I was about ten and bought beagles to hunt rabbits and birds with. We killed a lot of game back then and ate everything we killed except coons (even ate a couple of them). Mostly, coons were for the pelts.
I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything and tomorrow (as everyday) will be thankful for having the parents I had.

Re: Drinking
I'm with you, Roses. Cut my teeth on a single shot Sears 12 gauge at age 10. Dad and his friends were waterfowlers and took me duck and goose hunting on the Chesapeake. I remember being tucked up into the bow of the duck boat, climbing up into the blind out on the water, freezing my tookas and the men wading in the bay picking up fresh oysters for lunch. We always had Labs and dad used those for hunting, too. Mom brought them into the house so we had them as pets and Dad wasn't happy about that.
Then I got my .30-o6. A Remington model something or other BDL with a Lyman scope. Used it and my shotgun for deer. I, too, wouldn't trade my days in a duck blind and goose pit for anything, and deer camp was an eye-opener for a young boy. I truly believe we are better men for having learned all that. I learned about hunting, fishing, drinking, poker, women and life in general from those men.
Amen.

Re: Drinking
My Grandpa got me and my brother each a brand new Winchester 94 at birth. I have only shot a box of shells threw mine. The first gun I ever shot was his Remington 22 which is father bought in 1923, the year of his birth. I now own that gun and it is my most pized possesion.

Re: Drinking
I had the Red Ryder BB gun when I was 10. But since my dad didn't hunt, I got no exposure to guns except through my one uncle from Detroit who was a cop. We used to shoot his service revolver out in the woods when my cousins came home.
Things changed when I moved out on the farm. Too many coons, foxes, rats, etc getting into your feed and killing your stock. So I got my grandpap's old single-shot .22 from 1914 and a 12-gage to keep the poachers off.
First wife took the guns when she left. Miserable *****...

Re: Drinking
Getting up early, drinking a little coffee as a kid, watching the men, spening the whole day out in the cold and then coming home - I'd fall asleep in a heartbeat coming into the warm.
Good turn of phrase.

Re: Drinking
I remember the day I shot my first clay piggon. I was so ****ing excited. My grandma stood behind me and helped me aim the old double barel shot gun I was using. Some years later I had that gun and was going to shoot some ducks. My grandparents always had ducks on their proprtey but they were tame and could not fly, we always wanted to shoot them. One day grampa finaly said we could so my brother and I got on the back of the truck and he drove us down the road to shoot the ducks. I steped off the truck and was so ****ing excited that I pulled both trigers at once on that old double barrel......what a ****ing supize I got and the ducks got away.
