Re: Christmas drinking at Scuff's!
Sounds like fun. If I ever visit my aunt out in B-More, I'm crashing the party for some expensive hooch. Might white of the old man to spring for that ****. Scuff and Tweed, you've affected me. I think I'm switching over to Beam Rye as my go to. It's half the price of Knob Creek, and I really dig the ****. So there. ****ing big shot east coast ****ers telling me what to do......

Re: Christmas drinking at Scuff's!
Jim Beam Rye is excellent. Just the regular yellow label is $29 a handle and a most excellent goto. I agree, Slack. Scuff's hifalutin tastes prohibtit him from seriously endorsing JB Rye but it's good.
I think there are plenty of less expensive goto's. Ask Scuff about Old Forrester...

Scuff, tell me about Old Forrester. Do you gargle with it before work in the morning?

Re: Christmas drinking at Scuff's!
A complicated issue for sure. First I have to commend Weed for the words he wrote and which he should say to Pushbroom in ****ing person! He's right. His father, my friend, is a most generous man, a most honest man and the mulest ****ing man I ever met outside of my own Old Bastard, God rest his soul. But a true Colonel of the Bourbon.
It was great. We entered the Bourbon Club, where a selection of whiskeys awaited. Van Winkle 12 yo Lot B, Jack Daniels Tennessee Sour Mash Old #7 for Weed's Dad, George ****el Barrel Select, some Elijah Craig, Old Forester 86, Sazerac 18yo straight rye and Thomas Handy Sazerac straight rye whiskey. A pretty awesome selection.
Even Pushbroom tried the Thomas Handy and the Saz18. He's a Jack man to the end. The night before at the Book Club Christmas Party we had the very very top shelf Pappy Van Winkle 20 yo and the Pappy Van Winkle 15 yo. I loved them. Very smooth.
But Weed's bottle was right up there, with a strong alcohol nose, and a bright peppery note that eased off into a caramel lingering that lengthened the finish.I really liked it. Van Winkle's distill a fine product and Lot B is damn good. The Saz18 was very peppery and smooth, being a rye with no other grains on the Mash Bill. It was a mountain of a whiskey, no doubt. And then we opened the Thomas Handy Sazerac straight rye. At 127.4 proof this is a man's drink. No guzzlers allowed in these halllowed halls. The alcohol explosion was slightly awe inspiring as it swept into the mouth and rushed to the palate where the Fourth of July fireworks displayed themselves in celebration. The finale was rapid in coming and then the folks went home, gradually growing quieter but taking their time in leaving. I felt like I should have been rocking on the front porch of the southern mansion, watching the Weeping Willows sway lazily in the warm breeze. I also noted pecans in the taste of this most wonderful distillation. This, my friends, is a very, very, very fine drink. A man who buys that for someone is a special man, indeed.
The Old Forester is 86 proof and is also proof that you do not have to spend a lot to enjoy a taste. This was very smooth, had little bite and one might be tempted to gulp it, as one would an iced tea. There was a nice caramel bite, morphing into hints of chocolate and what I took to be leather, but I was getting a tad comfortable by this, our fifth glass. I will probably drink this as a cheap goto, as the others are costly enough to relegate them to special status. While I may even spring for the Pappy's 15 or 20yo as a milestone marker, if I get another grandson, I think I'll keep trying some of these highly recommended lower priced bourbons and ryes. My only closing note is that I do believe I like rye over bourbon. At least for now.
Kudos and many thanks to Pushbroom and Weed for making the night so fine. Springing for high end stuff like they did is not something to be taken lightly and they are exceedingly generous people. I was decked out in Plantation Gentlemen style, complete with vest and bow tie yet neither of my two compadres made too much fun of me. And the women were very understanding, as they stayed downstairs and were not granted admittance to the Club. Except for Weed's beautiful little girl, who sat on the floor, looking at the pictures in Michael Jackson's World of Whiskey book. Our food was good, our liquor was excellent and our women are beautiful. Life is good.

Re: Christmas drinking at Scuff's!
Sounds a lot better than what I did last night. I drank box wine, cleaned up dog **** off my carpet, baby **** that blew out my sons dipper, and the glass of rot gut wine my son spilled on my white carped. The leftover pasta I ate gave me the ****s until dawn.
