Re: All-Starr Quiz Edition: Do You Know Your Ringo Starr?
Okay, with the tour ending Thursday (I'll be there) in NYC, here are the answers to this month's Ringo Starr trivia.
1. Who is Bernard Purdie, and why does he think you should care?
----- Bernard is a great session drummer, but that's it. He has claimed a zillion times that Brian Epstein paid him money under the table BEFORE the Beatles were famous (that is, before they were famous OUTSIDE of Liverpool). Only hitch with that is WHY would Espstein have to do that. No one outside of Liverpool (and maybe Hamburg) knew who Ringo was. In the following interview with Max Weinberg, Purdie skirts the issue -- not knowing the names of the songs and insisting that Ringo wasn't around on any of that early music. Well, Purdie might be right if he means when the Beatles played with Tony Sheridan. Ringo wasn't part of the group, but that history seems lost on this perrenial session player:
Weinberg: You played on Beatles' tracks?
Purdie: Twenty-one of them.
Weinberg: Do you remember which ones?
Purdie: Ummhmm.
Weinberg: Which ones?
Purdie: That's information I don't disclose.
Weinberg: Why won't you name the tracks?
Purdie: Because if I need that information to get me some money, then I'll have what's necessary. I also played on songs by the Animals, the Monkees.
Weinberg: Everyone knows the Monkees were a fabricated band, but The Beatles?
Purdie: Ringo never played on anything.
Weinberg: Ringo never played on anything?
Purdie: Not the early Beatles stuff.
Max continues to challenge Purdie's assessment. Anyway, you can find more about this non-so controversial controversary here: http://www.jimvallance.com/03-projects-folder/purdie-project-folder/pg-purdie.html
2. The critics panned it, and so did most Beatle fans. What was the title of Ringo's biography as written by Alan Clayson?
-----Ringo Starr: Straight Man or Joker. Bottom line, if you read Clayson's other books, he was a hack.
3. Explain significance of Klaatu in Ringo's recording career. (Hint: the band by the same name is only a partial answer.)
-------The Rat is right: "Klaatu Barada Nikto to you too" was inspiration for Ringo's 'Goodnight Vienna' album jacket, based of course from the movie 'The Day the Earth Stood Still.' Of course, the rest of this is coincidence or Beatle trickery: Klaatu was ALSO the name of the group allegedly banded by a group of Canadian session players who made an album with no pictures (or family names) of the group. The songs were bylined strictly by Klaatu. Capitol was the albmu label. Much of the music has a beatelesque sound to it, and indeed the vocals are very similar sounding. In fact, listen to "Dr. Marvello" and try to convince yourself that isn't Ringo's voice. Or what about Subrosa Subway, which could be a parody on Red Rose Speedway by Paul. Could it be the Beatles, pre-Lennon death? If you're a Beatle conspiratist, then you'll be delighted to know that Klaatu was notorious for backward messages, including one that made you think, without a doubt, that J, P, G & R were hoodwinking us. (Klaatu's last album came out a year after Lennon died, in October in fact, and the group actually sounds different.) Here's their website: http://www.klaatu.org/,
4. How many (and which) Beatles had agreed to perform on Ringo's "I'm the Greatest?"
-----Yep, all were invited, but Paul had visa problems. So in 1973, all four Beatles agreed to perform together, thanks to Ringo. Anyway, Klaus V stood in for Paul in what was supposed to be a Fab reunion with Billy Preston. "Get Back" anyone?
5. What was the claim to fame of "Ringo or Robin"?
-----Ringo always wanted to be a hair stylist. Apparently, he also wanted to be a failure at furniture, which this was.
6. Who called Ringo, "a sodding great Al Capp?"
-----Maureen did, when suing her attorneys 10 year after her divorce from Ringo.
7. Who is Chips Moman?
------Producer who recorded Ringo in 1987 in Memphis for an album that Ringo sued to stop because he was too drunk, which he claimed impacted his performance. Ringo won. Eric Clapton, Dave Edmunds, Carl Perkins and Bob Dylan also made an appearance on the album that never would be. Studio time cost $150 per hour....ultimately totally $146K, of which Ringo was on the hook for half after the court decision. The album lives notoriously as a weird bootleg.
8. Whose wedding and in what year did Ringo jam with George and Paul?
-----Clapton in 1979, which was a wedding and gig that Lennon was surprised he was not invited to.
9. Bonus points if you can name the second wedding and year in which Ringo, George and Paul reprised their wedding jamming art.
------Ringo and Barbara's in 1981, which was a wedding that Yoko was surprised she was not invited to.
10. What Bob Dylan album jacket features Ringo Starr?
------The Basement Tapes, released in June 1975. You can see Ringo in the middleground wearing a Commodore's uniform: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002552/104-6727142-0258351?v=glance&n=5174
11. Who was Ringo referring to when he said, "I think the danger was mainly to him and his career?"
---------The King himself: Ringo was referring to the fact that Elvis had worked with the FBI to get the Beatles out of America.
12. Which projected All-Starr band member was DROPPED by Ringo during tour rehearsals?
---------Dave Mason in the 1997-98 edition with: Gary Brooker, Jack Bruce, Peter Frampton, Simon Kirke, Mark Rivera. No known reason is given for why Mason was sacked. Interestingly, in 1999, Ringo's buddy Joe Walsh signed on for another stint, but voluntarily dropped himself out before rehearsals started. This year, Mark Hudson and Mark Rivera both dropped out because of other engagements.
13. Who was Ringo referring to when he sang: "If I'm gonna get you, well, I gotta be strong."
--------Devil Woman....or aka Sexy Sadie
14. What Beatle song did Ringo say featured "good drums."
---------As I already wrote, Ringo was talking about "The Ballad of John and Yoko" which featured Paul on drums. Ringo was off filming and George was off doing his own thing, so "Ballad" featured just John and Paul -- but still made it to #1.
15. Who introduced Billy Preston to Ringo and the Beatles, and when?
----------Little Richard in 1962, which is also the year that Ringo joined the Beatles (forever ousting Bernard Purdie from the recording studio!).
16. What was the named of the first band that Ringo played in?
------------In 1957, Ringo played with Eddie Miles in The Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group. He then joined The Raving Texans in 1959, a quartet that played while Rory Storm sang (later known as The Hurricanes). During his time with Rory, nicknames were mandatory, so that's when Ringo adopted his own nickname -- because of the rings he wore, and because it sounded 'cowboyish'. As for Starr, it referred to the solo billing Rory afforded him at each gig -- when Ringo sang lead for two or three tunes during "Starr Time."
17. Who was the "Step Ladder"?
-------Harry Graves, Ringo's step dad, and only father he really knew.
18. Ex-girlyfriend Nancy Andrews earned album credits with Ringo. What did she purportedly do? (Hint there's multiple possible answers to this.)
---------She co-wrote Las Brias on the "Rotogravure" album. The credit read: By Nancy Andrews and Richard Starkey (alphabetically). Nancy also inspired some of the titling and photography for Rat's favorite album, "Ringo the 4th." For the "Bad Boy" album, Ringo did a promo video dancing with Nancy. Some reports indicate that Maureen divorced Ringo for commiting adultry with Nancy, but he was already quite the lady's man by the time he had met Nancy. At the end, justice for Maureen when Ringo met Barbara and dumped Nancy. She later sued Ringo for palimony once the gravy train ended.
19. Who are Jeremy Slate and Locke Walls, and how do those names connect to Ringo Starr?
------I love this question. It is the ultimate in trivia, and even the most diehard of Ringo fans don't know this. So here we go:
Jeremy Slate was an actor who played the character Locke Walls on GUIDING LIGHT for six weeks in 1985, and then was killed at the end of his run. So what???? Well, that part was originally written for Ringo, to play an aging rock star singing Gordon Lightfoot songs. At the last minute, Ringo ultimately decided he could not to do the soap part. It's too bad. Ringo was to play an old love of Countess Alexandra. No known reason is available as to why Ringo bailed after agreeing to the six-week stint on the daily soap. Maybe he didn't want to die on TV, just a few years after his best friend was murdered.
20. Ringo co-starred with Marlon Brando in Candy. Name another connection that Ringo has to the legendary actor.
--------Rat was partially right when he said that the reference was to "The Wild Ones" with Lee Marvin and Marlon Brando. But that's not the real connection. Remember Hyman Roth from "Godfather II?" That role was played by legendary acting teacher Lee Strasberg (who got that part through one of acting pupils -- Al Pacino). Before "Godfather III" came out (the movie about the Vatican conspiracy, starring Pacino and Andy Garcia), there were so many false starts to get a "Godfather III" in the theaters. At one point, Ringo was studying at Strasberg's famed acting school, when he was approached by Godfather producers to perhaps play the part of Roth's son, Hyman Roth, Jr. But it was not to be....The third installment of the Godfather movie series was plagued by ineptitude and studio fighting. So the idea was dropped, and Ringo never got a chance to play a mobster seeking revenge on Michael Corleone.

Fantastic work, Larry. That was really fun and interesting. Nancy Andrews failed in her palimony suit, btw. I wonder what happened to her?

Re: All-Starr Quiz Edition: Do You Know Your Ringo Starr?
You know, I was wondering the same thing. Even Google searches fail provide current info. I guess she just faded out....
Anyway, thanks for the nice words on the survey. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I'll be back later this week with a review of Radio City.

We all had a great time. Review to come shortly.
