Re: a very good morning to you dorothy ThANK YOU ALL for your thoughts and for visiting Oz while I was away... things are just a little topsy turvee right now..
The wiz's momma is still in the acute rehabilitation place in NYC and they expect her to be there for a few months.. her progress is very slow.. still no use of her right arm/leg from the stroke but at least she can speak..
It's tough getting old folks!
Now listen up you old people with old folks.. when your parents or YOU are nearing that good old age -- a word to the wise -- do not have much money in their names -- like about $2,000 and mebbe a house is about it. Thats the requirement for medicaid AND you can only make about $650/month including social security. They will take the rest. Every state differs but basically its a federal program.
IF you think about gifting away your money medicaid checks back three years and will count that money as the parent owing it even though it had been gifted and spent.
SO... plan ahead!
Medicare (as opposed to medicaid) on the other hand anyone can get over the age of 65 but don't even think they will cover much. In this instance (managed HMO medicare for which she was paying $54/month out of social security) they cover 100 days in the facility with a $25/day co-pay. After that you are on your own at $375/day!
A few things that are not counted by medicaid as assets are approx $2-3,000 in the bank, your house, and your burial plot.
We are also cleaning out her NYC apt where she has lived since the 1950's.. since she never threw anything away there's a lot to go through.. I'll have some old treasures to send you rat and twistie since you guys love that old stuff !
THe wiz's father was in a music related business so theres some old stuff relative to that (1944 issue of Down Beat for example)
as well as a signed pic from Venessa del Rio and tons of old girlie magazines LOL! The man knew how to live!
Momma was a rockette 1939-1943.. and then later a chorus line dancer Amongst other tings..
What a set of legs!
Love to all!
