The Monkees ride the Rhino
For those who think Rhino ran out of material...or maybe they just got tired of putting out compilations (3 greatest hits cds, 2 box sets, 3 budget hits comps, and 1 kids cd), well, they did do something rather amazing. The deluxe editions of "The Monkees" and "More of the Monkees" are impressive. The mono mixes are great, it's kinda nice to have the related material with it's parent album, all they aren't many things that they haven't put out before. ("Kicking Stones" is a new song for those looking at the track list. Rhino previously released it as "Teeny Tiny Gnome".) While neither of the original albums would be among their two best (too much Davy Jones), the outtakes included are mostly of superior stuff. And following the time lines, it seems around the era of these two albums, there were at least 3 teams recording their own idea of a Monkees album (Nesmith, Boyce/Hart and the Kirshnerites), with only Don Kirshner having any idea what anyone else was doing. Should be interesting how far they take this and for how long. After their fifth album, there were no mono releases. And as far as corralling the outtakes, there's nearly an album's worth between the release of "More of the Monkees" and prior to the "Headquarters" sessions.
And you still hafta wonder what Apple has against outsourcing, when they have final approval anyway. So what we usually wind up is a years in the making remastering, with a good deal of the original artwork ditched and a running time of oh, about 40 minutes..including bonus tracks!

Still longer than 'Blast From Your Past', with TNWalrus's fave "Top 10 consecutive hits in a row"!

Re: The Monkees ride the Rhino
That's unbroken string of seven consecutive top 10 hits in row!
Kinda wished Rhino would have followed their logic to its natural conclusion and called Papa Nes on his story that "Papa Gene's Blues" is a typo, and that Jean was an old girfriend of his. (I'm sure she loved being called Papa...or perhaps that's why she had the blues.) Anyroad, "Papa Jean's Blues" closely resembles Ricky Nelson's hit version of "Hello Mary Lou" written by Papa Gene Pitney. So there!

Re: The Monkees ride the Rhino
Just a typical music biz trick, to arrange a song to sound like a previous hit record...like Elvis' "The Fool" sounding quite like "Come Together".

Re: The Monkees ride the Rhino
Like George with 'My Sweet Lord'. He and Nez are too good a songwriters to have to stoop to such levels. I have all Nez's albums and the only Dylan one I have is the one Ringo plays drums on.

Re: The Monkees ride the Rhino
Good Stuff! Monkees are one of the few groups that all members are still alive. I also have all their autographs, via mail in response to fan letter. Do have Mikes on the limited edition version of the 'Rays' cd! Call me Captain Name Dropper!
