Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
A listing shows up on e-Bay for a numbered, factory sealed UK copy of the White Album from 1968. Why should you not touch it with a bargepole?

Re: Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
Uuuummmmm, how do they know what the number is in the fade out if it's sealed. And, why would anyone own the thing since 1968 and have never opened it or played it - was it owned by Paulie or George or somesuch....
Seal-a-meal is also available for sale on
e-boughtandsold.
Pristine teddybears and dolls and toy trucks of old come to mind. Must not have been a fave if the kid never touched it.

Re: Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
well, I was referring to the original numbered covers of the White Album....
but the reason would be...UK albums weren't factory sealed...the sleeves were in the racks and the customer would have to take it up to the counter to get the discs. The loose bags that we yanks are used to for UK albums were only those imported into the US..and that didn't really catch on until the '70s...long after supplies of numbered White Albums would have been exhausted.
Buyer beware! Bargepoles at the ready!

Re: Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
I have an embossed original. I don't know the serial number but it has the poster and the 4 individual pics. I was offered by a collector in the area $300.00
What really suprosed me was the Velvet Underground ( Andy Warhol ) Banana album that I was offered 1000.00 for. I should take the money and run but I'm keeping them for now.

Re: Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
As far as I know, the White Album in the US continued to be embossed (usually at a slightly odd angle as intended) until Capitol started pressing it on their own label in 1976. And continuing to date (hopefully until September 9th, the US version still has the airbrushed poster artwork...although I believe the poster was turned into a cd booklet, pretty much ruining it. I mean, this wasn't just any poster, but a piece designed by a reknowned Pop Artist, whose work is studied in college courses. Maybe not the household name Warhol obviously is, but at least Richard Hamiliton did his own work!

Re: Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
So what was that red furry (or was it a piece of fluffy red shag carpet) album my friend had - non-Fab, the poor soul. There seems to be no name or label or whatever....
The original 1960's FAB albums and jackets were definitely pieces of art with MUCH lost in the translation when the inserts and covers were miniturized for the cd's. Also remembering how there was some heavy competition among the groups for the next most outlandish or unusual or innovative cover / insert art. Fine that, indeed.

Re: Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
Myself, I thought the crappiest album sleeve to cd booklet tragedies in the Fabs' catalogue were:
1. Revolver-for cutting up the back cover into 4 separate and over-small pieces
2. MMT-for not including the booklet...bet then again, Capitol discontinued that about 1976 when they sunk their fangs into the Beatles catalogue.
3. Abbey Road-it just smells of leftover baby poop.
4. Red Rose Speedway-not even the DCC gold disc or the remastered Euro cd comes anywhere near including the entire booklet.
5. Imagine-why haven't the original sleeve and label ever been reproduced?
6. STINYC-the original 2-cd packaging is just WTF incarnate. And what Capitol did the packaging is perfectly equaled by what Yoko did to the reissue. (Not the packaging...the cd. WTF?! WTF?!)
7. Walls & Bridges-I can almost forgive Capitol for the original decision to not be entirely faithful to the album packaging. Who knew these cds would catch on? But when Yoko replaced any semblance of the original packaging (John was so fond of the job Roy Kohara did with no input from him, that he let him do Rock 'n' Roll, too), AND changed John's hair color from auburn to black...and used the STINYC label here instead of there...well, I cursed her to a life of wearing very silly hats.
btw...if you've seen the current vinyl incarnation of Abbey Road...you might notice a certain something missing...like the Apple logo.

Re: Tough Trivia for the e-Bay Era
And it was the Bee Gees Odessa that was packaged in a red velvet sleeve. Not sure how faithful Rhino was with their cd issue. Anyroad, the album immediately devalued all other albums in its proximity by also turning them red and fuzzy. It's the vinyl equivalent of a tribble.
