Re: Hare Birthday

It was the fall of 1974. I was a senior in high school. The Beatles had split up 4 years earlier, but in reality as solo artists they were all over the airwaves in 74. McCartney had released the singles Jet and Band on the Run, with Juniors Farm soon on the way in November. John had just
released Whatwever Gets You Through the Night off of Walls and Bridges. Ringo was king of the Hill with "Ringo" being released in late '73 and then having the
singles "You're 16" "Oh My My" "photograph" and "only you" back to back to back to back.
Then there was George. After taking the early kudos in the Solo Sweepstakes with the release of "All Things Must Pass", George in '74 released the album "Dark Horse".
In some ways the words of John Lennon rang very true. 'yer getting four times the music now'.

And I can still remember seeing that full page newspaper ad. I was working in the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs in this gift shop called the Hidden Inn, nestled underneath the Kissin' Camels red limestone (or maybe sandstone) rock formation.

I worked in the coffee shop. They called us the "coffee bar boys". All the guys worked in the coffee shop. The girls worked in the gift shop selling Indian jewelry and various touristy enticements.

This was a big deal for me this job. Because everybody that worked there was from different high schools. So that meant all the cliquish stereotypes that would haunt you in your old high school were non-existent
at the work place. In other words, a normal geeky shy guy like myself had a chance

Re: Hare Birthday

so where was I?

Oh yeah, nerds like me had a shot with the girls from other schools at least temporarily until the nerd characteristics would become obvious to them.

Anyway back to the aforementioned newspaper ad.

I was taking a break at work or maybe it was lunch. There was the Denver Post with a full page ad announcing the upcoming fall tour of one Mr. George Harrison. Or as I remember, "George Harrison & Friends."

Sitting at the table with me was a girl named Susie. She had already graduated from high school and was working at the Hidden Inn on weekends while going to college.

At the time, at age 17, my idea of a girl that I would like to date was probably typical of most guys then (and perhaps still is for young guys now) was the blonde perky cheerleader type.

I was to learn much later of the error of my ways in adhering to this singlemindedness...but at the time I thought, if I can't go out with the cheerleader types then, I just won't go out.

So of course I didn't go out much.

Anyway back to Susie.

Looking back on it, she was pretty cute. Back then however, "the coffee bar boys" me included would poke some fun at her. Well not at her, but behind her back. We were 16, 17 year olds, what can I say?

So Susie and I were there at the table. I was looking at the ad and commenting how cool it would be to see George. But what I didn't say to her was that there was no way
I would ask my father, "The Colonel" to borrow one of the family cars to drive the 70 miles to Denver to see George.

Susie was a year old older and in college, says to me, "If you want to go, I'll drive and by your ticket".

She would drive! And buy the ticket! And who knows what else! She was in college. Had her own car. Didn't live with her parents.

And what did I do?

Well you can guess. I didn't go.

And thirty-one years later, when I hear "Ding Dong" or "Dark Horse" and I think of George-I can't help but be reminded of the one time that I could have seen him.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger Weedman. I was offered a free ticket to see Paulie in Atlanta, all I had to do was get there and a s usual I did not want to ask for the Day off for fear of getting a cane-ing and of course the ruination of the company because I took a Day off. No pretty female involved in my story though. With a little filler to make it longer your story would be a great chapter in my book or maybe get you 100 bucks from Readers Digest!

And for pc, at the Hidden Inn there were many levels to this building. It was a stucco or adobe structure and had decks on a couple different levels where tourists could go out and stick a quarter in these "for pay" binoculars. There was a way to get to the top of the roof, a winding wooden, staircase that would get you there. the top was called "the crows nest". And thats where the "coffee bar boys" would sneak off to smoke joints.
