Lost another legend

Drumming pioneer Jim Chapin dies in Fort Myers

For drummers around the world, Jim Chapin was the man who wrote the bible.

Chapin, a jazz drummer who wrote “Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer,” died Saturday at ManorCare Health Services in Fort Myers, a few weeks shy of his 90th birthday.

Chapin, born and raised in New York, began drumming in 1938 at the age of 18. His book, published in 1948 and commonly referred to by musicians as the bible, is still one of the most influential teaching aids for drummers.

“That’s the book that you study and you never finish,” said Tom Chapin, 64, of New York.

Tom Chapin is one of Jim Chapin’s 10 children — one of whom was Harry Chapin, namesake for the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Fort Myers and a musician whose work included “Cats in the Cradle” and “Taxi.”

Tom Chapin, a Grammy-winning musician who hosted the “Make a Wish” children’s TV show in the 1970s, said his fondest memory of his father was his love of life.

“He had more fun than the rest of the world,” Tom Chapin said. “His sense of joy and his sense of total professionalism about music was a wonderful example for us.”

Even in his 80s, Chapin put his passion to practice. In August 2007, Chapin made a trip to Nova Scotia for an annual family get-together. Tom Chapin said illness had taken its toll on his father, and he didn’t look well — but there was a cure.

“We got him behind the drums, and he shed 30 years,” Tom Chapin said.

Joyce Jacobs, associate director for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, said Chapin not only loved drumming, but he loved being around people as well. “He was very vivacious, very lively,” said Jacobs, who knew Chapin for about 30 years. “He never complained about anything.”

A few years ago, despite being in a wheelchair, Chapin played at Taste of Boca Grande, a benefit for the Harry Chapin Food Bank. “We really appreciated that he continued helping as long as he could,” Jacobs said.

Brent Wedler, owner of Brent’s Music Headquarters in Fort Myers, said Chapin was a “tremendous educator.” Chapin would draw a crowd no matter where he was, Wedler said. “Young or old, it didn’t make any difference,” he said. “They would always be around him.”

RIP Jim and say hi to Harry for us. emoticon

Space Drummer Dies Suddenly at 42

Andy Parle, the former drummer from Liverpool, England band Space, died on Saturday, in an incident police have described as "unexplained." He was 42.

Parle -- who drummed on Space hits such as 'Neighbourhood', 'The Female of the Species' and 'Me and You Versus the World' -- was crossing the road in Dingle, Liverpool on Saturday night when he collapsed.

Passersby and paramedics gave help at the scene, and he was then taken to the Liverpool Royal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His former bandmate, Dave "Yorkie" Palmer, told the Liverpool Echo newspaper: "It's the saddest, most tragic end you could have."

He added: "Space continued to have success after Andy left but the band changed and lost something which Andy had contributed. Even though we had another brilliant drummer there was something about Andy's style which was unique."A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said they did not believe Parle had been assaulted or hit by a vehicle, but wanted any witnesses to his collapse to come forward.

She added: "Officers investigating the death are keen to speak with anyone who may have been in the area around this time and particularly any taxi drivers using this busy route to come forward.

"A post mortem will be held to establish the cause of death."

Parle was part of the Liverpool band's line-up when they became favourites of Radio 1 DJ Chris Evans, whose championing of the track 'The Female of the Species' helped Space become a radio staple during 1996. Space's melding of styles -- the retro lounge styling of 'Money' next to the staccato, ska-tinged 'Neighbourhood' -- made them a more inventive live prospect than many of their contemporaries.

Their debut album 'Spiders' reached platinum in the UK and the band also had limited success in the US. Prior to Parle's departure, the band had another UK hit with 'Me and You Versus the World'.
