Shadows drummer dies after accident
Sir Cliff Richard has led the tributes to Tony Meehan, the original drummer of the Shadows who has died at the age of 62.
Meehan, who played on all the group's early hits, died at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, central London, on Monday after an accident at his home.
Sir Cliff described him as a "major force" in creating the distinctive sound of the group, who became Britain's most successful instrumental band.
He said: "I was so shocked to hear of Tony's death.
"His innovative drumming was the backbone of the band, and his aggressive yet sparse style was similar to Ringo's five years later with The Beatles."
He said Meehan had been "affectionately known as The Baron" because of his desire for the best in life and his commitment to the band, which he left in 1961.
"Although we didn't keep in close touch after he left the band in the early 1960s, it was always good when we were able to meet and reminisce from time to time over the years," Sir Cliff said.
"It seems horrifying that a domestic accident should take his life at such a relatively young age, and my deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and family."

Thanks for that update Rat. As I told PC, i'll post it on a few of the drummer forums just to see it get buried in record time as nobody will recognize The Shadows or Tony for that matter.

Jackson 5 Drummer Stabbed to Death
GARY, Ind. (March 3) - A former drummer for the Jackson 5 was stabbed to death inside a home, authorities said.
Johnny Jackson, 54, was found dead Wednesday, the coroner's office said. It was not immediately clear whether he was related to the Jackson family, who also are from Gary.
Police went to the home after an upstairs resident heard a disturbance between Jackson and a woman on the first floor, police Cmdr. Jack Arnold said. Authorities were still looking for the woman.
Police believe Johnny Jackson, who replaced the Jackson 5's original drummer, Milford Hite, around 1967, was a cousin of the famous family. Other reports said he was not a blood relative.
"It hurts me so bad," said boyhood friend Anthony Acoff. "I called him that night. We were supposed to go to a jam session."
Jackson grew up a few blocks from the Jackson family and had made a name for himself as a drumming prodigy before he started high school, said Gordon Keith, who has sued Jackson family members over the rights to their early recordings with his Steeltown Records.
"He was a show drummer," Keith recalled. "There were times that he would outshine Michael at their shows."
In recent years, Jackson played with Acoff's band, White Dove.

He was the longtime Doobie Brothers drummer who was part of the band during a string of hits that included “Taking it to the Streets” and “Black Water.” Knudsen began drumming in eighth grade and joined the Doobie Brothers in 1974. After a week's rehearsal, he went on the road with the band. The Doobies were known for incorporating gospel and jazz stylings into popular hit songs. They also were well-regarded for their live performances. Their other hits included “China Grove” and “Jesus is Just Alright.” Knudsen played with the Doobies until the band's 1982 farewell tour. During the band's hiatus, Knudsen and bandmate John McFee formed the country rock group Southern Pacific, which released four albums and had several hits. He rejoined the band full-time in 1993. He battled cancer in 1995 and it left him weak and he ever fully regained all his strength. He was hospitalized for pneumonia at the time of his death.

Keith Knudsen, a drummer for the Doobie Brothers since 1974, died of pneumonia Tuesday. He was 56.
Knudsen, who lived in Sonoma County's wine country, had been hospitalized for more than a month. He died at Kentfield Rehabilitation Hospital at about 12:30 p.m., according to the band's longtime manager Bruce Cohn.
"I just saw him Sunday, just before the Super Bowl," Cohn said. "He was in good spirits. He was weak, but he was OK."
Knudsen, who said he began drumming in eighth grade, joined the classic rock band in 1974 after he met Cohn, who told him the Doobies needed a drummer.
"After a week's rehearsal, I went on the road with the band," Knudsen said in his biography on the band's Web site.
The Doobies, who had a lengthy string of hits including "Black Water,""Minute By Minute,""What a Fool Believes" and "Taking it to the Streets," were known for incorporating gospel and jazz stylings into popular hit songs. They also were well-regarded for their live performances.

He said the band was currently performing about 100 concerts a year and is scheduled to release a new album this summer.
Knudsen is survived by his wife of 16 years, Kate, and their daughter, Dayna Keyes.
Funeral and memorial arrangements are pending. Donations can be made to Knudsen's longtime favorite charity, the National Veterans Foundation
