Moments of Genius
of course talkin' bout (my generation), Fab moments of sheer brilliance.
Here is one-
The Rooftop concert.
Emulated but never duplicated. How could anyone? And singing a tune called "Get Back" on a rooftop....
That was the genius of the Beatles, most of their good moves were just larks, spontaneous things....that worked.

Re: Moments of Genius
I was kind of hoping to spur some discussion on the Fabs-this being a beatle-inspired site. But what an idiot I am, Britany and cereal are much more interesting topics.

Re: Moments of Genius
if it's Beatle Genius you want Steve then the idea to do videos instead of live concerts was genius and way, way ahead of it's time : Pre-MTV. The videos are all quality.

Re: Moments of Genius
And, here, the blasphemy begins...
I think any traits of genius exhibited by The Beatles were almost accidental -- a confluence of individual God-given talents, personal imaginations, group dynamics, where-the-heck-did-that-come-from inspirations, who-cares-what-anyone-else-thinks creativity, and (perhaps one of the most overlooked, and under-appreciated factors) not taking themselves too seriously.
There's little doubt that they took making music seriously (though not too seriously) -- but they seemed to be at their best when they thought beyond their individual selves and functioned as a band (which, I think, is why they so were so rarely able to capture that special Beatle magic in their solo works).
For example, take a song like "Hey Jude": in spite of the earnestness of the lyric and performance, there is a levity lurking just beneath the surface that gives it a buoyant, joyful quality.
Or take "Octopus's Garden": beneath the obvious humor and child-like whimsy, there is a seriousness lurking that keeps it from being merely a disposable novelty tune. (Next time you're listening to Abbey Road -- and "Octopus's Garden" comes on -- take a good long look at the four serious looking grown-ups crossing the street on the album cover, and keep reminding yourself, "they're the ones performing this charmingly deceptive bit of delightfulness.")
I don't think anyone was more surprised by what they accomplished than The Beatles themselves. They were just having fun -- they never believed people would still be getting so excited by their music 40+ years later.
I think the reason a lot of covers of Beatles songs don't work is because they are treated too reverently, and it sucks the life out of them. The Beatles never treated them that way -- which is why there was always a freshness, and an urgency, to most (if not all) of what they created.
So, ultimately, I think the closest thing to genius about The Beatles was the fact that they didn't take themselves seriously enough to try to be geniuses. Bloody brilliant, if you ask me.

I thought they were called "promotional films" or "promo clips".
