Re: Moments of Genius
okay
How's this for genius.
The guitar feedback before the song,
I FEEL FINE. Never done before.
Beginning the album Revolver with a messed up count in with a cough to tell the world, The New Beatles are here.
Paul's death clues. Genius. Hold a mirror to the middle of the bass drum on the Sgt Pepper album and read what it says.
'Cranberry Sauce" indeed.
A Day In The Life was the 1st Art / Prog Rock
song. Accident ? I don't think so.

Re: Moments of Genius
okay..one moment of genius at a time.
The song, While My Guitar Gently Weeps was the beginning of the 'Classic Rock' sound.
More to follow.

Re: Moments of Genius
quote: Steve A wrote:
...That was the genius of the Beatles, most of their good moves were just larks, spontaneous things....that worked.
I just noticed that, in my first posting on this subject, I failed to mention that I totally agree with Steve on the above point -- and my attempt to elaborate got a little sideways, due to an interruption and the necessity of finishing quickly and getting offline. And I'm surprised the subject hasn't generated a more spirited discussion (bald britney pics notwithstanding).
Whenever my brother and I used to tell band members to "think like The Beatles", they inevitably thought we meant sound like The Beatles. It's amazing how hard it is to get people to think wide-open. The Beatles always did -- nothing was out of bounds.
I think a big part of their boundry (and generation) defying creativity was that the songs were always paramount -- much more important than image (even though they were trend-setters there, too). I think that's why Paul and Ringo can still pull those songs off live, and no one ever goes, "Wow, they sure can't strut and jump around the stage like they used to". (Let's be honest, their live shows were/are never about the visuals, but were/are primarily about the performance of the music -- even though it's quite enjoyable watching the performance.)
As for "Moments of Genius":
How about the fact that most of their drug inspired songs were often thought to be about girls. And so many of the songs thought to be about drugs weren't.
Or being smart enough to let George Martin work his magic (one last time), as they worked their's, to leave us what is perhaps the finest farewell album ever. (Not to mention, putting their egos aside just long enough to produce one last masterpiece.)
Also, I've always thought it funny, how people think "Strawberry Fields Forever" sounds like an LSD trip, but the reason it sounds so trippy is due to GM thinking outside the box.
Categories? Pigeon-holes? These things are beyond meaningless when dicussing Beatles music. May it always be so.

Re: Moments of Genius
Always willing to take the chance and the risk trying the untried and more.
Remembering that LONG hair, the thought of a picture on underwear (white t-shirt) that they expected us to wear on the outside in public, the unbelievable effect of that new fangled stereo sound, the album art and inserts etc, the blending of music / sounds from all types of places and traditions and such, and it goes on and on and on and on....
