Ahhh, the never ending stories about opinions.
We disagree on this one Ricketay. While I consider 'Driving Rain' (listened to it on the way to work the last couple of days) to be an average album at best, I despise MAF. 'Only Mama Knows' is the only song on that album that I think is worth a damn. Not sure why I have never warmed up to that album being the Paul fanboy that I am, but I just cant do it. It'll sit on the shelf right by 'McCartney 2'.
Ironically, I consider 'Chaos and Creation' to be one of his top three albums of all time.
Oh well.
Never-ending as they are, I usually find them very interesting (and, often, informative).
Dicussions about something as subjective as musical tastes can be both fun and maddening (oftentimes simultaneously). And that's especially true when it's the music of someone as stylistically and qualitatively diverse as PMcC.
It sounds like we share the same low opinion of McCartney II. I can't believe it's been remastered, and Wings Over America hasn't (stupid record label blankers).
Right after posting my previous piece of babbled incoherency, I decided to give Driving Rain a fresh listen (thinking maybe it was better than I remembered). But, alas, I only made it a third to halfway through it. There is so much wasted potential on that album; a bunch of good ideas that are tantalizingly hinted at, but never fulfilled. It's so frustrating! I don't hate it - but I don't really dig it, either.
I think my feelings about Chaos and Creation are similar to my feelings about DR, but combined with a sense of "Maybe I'm not listening to the same album the critics are going on about". I was going to listen to it last night, but realized I don't have it (I had borrowed my brother's copy, and never bought it myself).
I've never quite understood the negative reactions to Memory Almost Full. So, if you're ever in the mood - you being a self described Paul fanboy, and all - please feel free to elaborate (at length, even). I'm not trying to start an argument - I'm just always curious about such things. Sometimes, hearing why someone likes something can change the way you look at it, and give you a greater appreciation of it.
By the way, what do you consider the other two of his top three albums?
I agree with you about discussing music. It can be really entertaining (its all personal taste), or people end up getting upset for some reason because they cant agree with each other which is silly.
Anyways, my liking of 'Chaos and Creation' is based on my opinion that Paul released an album that was almost entirely Adult/Contemporary and thats what he does best at this stage. People always want that rock song from him, but even when he was younger I thought he did the Adult/Contemporary stuff better. With 'Chaos', I think that Nigel Godrich had Paul check his ego in at the front door everyday. The only songs I might have issues with are 'A Fine Line' (to poppy, but still a better pop tune than anything off of MAF), 'At The Mercy' (just to long and boring), and 'Anyway' (which is a blatant rip-off of 'People get Ready'). All the others are top notch. 'Too Much Rain' is one of the best songs Paul has done in the last 20 years or so. The production of the album is fantastic too. Crisp and clear.
'Memory Almost Full' just didnt sit well for some reason. It bums me out too because I love just about everything from Paul and this album was just bland. 'Dance Tonight' is awful. I dont care if he wrote it for Beatrice or not, its borderline embarrasing and whats worse,,,he pimped it. 'Her Majesty' was a better song. 'Ever Present Past' falls into the same category. Just not a very good song. Sounds like he took 3 minutes to write it. Juevenile almost. I wont bore you with the rest, but I do like 'Only Mama Knows' (guess i'm guilty of choosing the rocker too), 'House Of Wax' (alright song), and 'The End Of The End' (decent tune). The rest just sounds and feels like absolute filler to me. One other thing, the production is horrendous. Do you realize how loud that cd is? I think that all the subtleties are gone due to it. Paul missed on this one, but at least I opted for the deluxe two cd set with the extra 4 songs that i've listened to once. Oh well.
Pauls top 3 albums in my opinion -
RAM
Flaming Pie
Chaos and Creation

I agree. Although musical tastes are very personal, and can be emotionally charged, it is very silly to let one's love of music (however passionately felt) lead to upset or conflict with those who have different tastes - it just takes all the enjoyment out of it.

I am currently reappraising my opinion of Chaos and Creation. I've been listening to it and Memory Almost Full repeatedly for the last few days, trying to hear both with fresh ears (which isn't easy with ears as old as mine). I like Chaos... much better than I originally stated (I think I was getting my opinions of it and Driving Rain tangled up). And I do agree with you about the production - it is fantastic. More to come...

When I'm done reacquainting myself with both, I'll elaborate further. (I know I tend to be long-winded, so don't feel obligated to read any more of my babblings than you can stomach.)
Wow, we agree on two of your top 3.

I've enjoyed reading what you have to say so far.
See, we both have great taste.

I, perhaps, should clarify that I don't consider an artist creatively lazy just because they don't do something groundbreaking everytime they make an album. I mean, I'm not completely unreasonable (just mostly).
That is what confussed me when Richard Perry said he had gone as far as he could go with Ringo. What is wrong with just making good records? You don't have to recreate the wheel or make another Sgt Pecker each time you make make an album!
