If You Want To Be Published
Found this at another board where there is fan fiction. It is good to know this if anyone wants to be publsihed.
Found at Ink Slingers an EzbOARD
As writers and storytellers, whether seasoned or aspiring, we all are on the road to learning every aspect, every nuance of writing. From grammar, story lines, and characterization...to the business end concerning publication, editing, intellectual property and our rights according to law. This brings us to a very serious subject, especially for those of us who dream of being published. Here is some crucial information that every Ink Slinger should know.
Your First Rights.
We want Ink Slingers to be not only a "safe haven" for us to congregate and discuss and review our work, but also a safe haven for our work itself. We want all of our members to know their rights as writers and how to protect them.
If a writer posts a completed work on the Internet (Web site, Message Board, E-zine, etc.) the piece is then considered a published work. Most publishers will not accept the piece for submission because of First Rights. Publishers want First Rights to a story, meaning the piece has never been published. If you have posted your complete work on the Internet, you have already used those First Rights. If you have a story or poem that you intend on submitting for possible publication and it is a completed edited final draft DO NOT POST IT ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET.
If you have ever posted a completed, edited final draft story or poem on the Internet and then submitted it for publication, you must indicate to the publisher that it has been "published" on the Internet. If you do not and the piece gets published, someone could recognize the work and inform the publisher. The publisher would be within their legal rights to sue you for breach of contract. It doesn't matter how long ago you posted it. Recently a new writer lost their first big print sale because their work had been posted on an Internet web page.
Now, what can be done with first draft, unfinished works (that you want to publish one day) is to post Works in Progress in a registered, members only, password protected area. That way an aspiring author can get the feedback they need from a trusted circle of friends/writers.
Just something to keep in mind when writing and posting.

Re: If You Want To Be Published
Hey, thanks for putting that up there, it really helps to know that sort of stuff if you're thinking about getting something published. It really helped me becasue I was wondering what would happen with that, if I wanted to get something published and put it on here, thanks a lot!
