Somersault

Hello everyone! For quite some time I've wanted to write this fanfic but never seemed to have the time. Now I do so, I hope you guys like it...

Inside the mind of a woman who thought had experienced it all. Inside the heart of a man who thought had felt it all.

Chapter one: Bye Bye Bo

The house was overwhelmed with whispering. None dared make a sound. They even walked cautiosly on the wooden floors.

Lately the days had been gloomy and quiet; but her heart was beating so loud, that she thought that everyone at the wake could hear it.

She sat quietly with a trembling hand over her chest and all she did was smile at the thought of her late boyfriend laughing and being the free spirited fellow that he was.

All of her memories with him were delighful and lovely. She couldn't recall a single moment in which they had a true and fiery fight, she couldn't recall him ever being mad or displeased with anything or anyone, for that matter.

With him it was all: "That's okay, that's okay. Look at it on the bright side!..." He was merry and funny, romantic and passionate, full of life and now...gone.

It was all bizarre and funny. She never thought she would find herself in a place were she didn't know what to make of her life.

Bo was her life and her love. What could she possibly do? Even a person as proper and meticulous about her plans, had absolutely no clue. She gazed unto the empty space in front of her, not noticing how sad this would look to the other ones at the wake.

Her fingers were playing with a delicate but intricate ring with a esmerald cut diamond. The cold feeling of the gold band was somewhat warm compared to her touch. Her face fell slowly into her hands as she felt the urge to cry. but she wouldn't do that in front of everyone.

No, not here. Suck it upShe thought. At least until everyone's gone...

But still, I tiny tear trickled down her cheek, which surprised her. And with a jolt to sit up straight, she wiped it off before anyone could notice. Right at that moment, a friend called out to her.

"Natalie?"
"Yeah?..." She responded a little annoyed.
"What you got there?" The voice asked refering to the piece of jewelery that she had been playing with for quite some time now.

Natalie's eyes met hers. Coral and her had been best friends forever, since kiddies. So she couldn't lie to her, Coral could tell. There was really no point in hiding her true feelings.

"He planned on giving me this." She had placed the ring on her ring finger and stretched out her hand so her friend could see. Coral gasped in both pity and shock.
"His parents gave it to me just moments ago. Apparently..."

Natalie's eyes went back to the ring and swallowed hard to finish her sentence. She tried again feeling much more put together."Apparently he had this big surprise for me in a few weeks."

A long pause took place. Honestly, Coral had no idea what to tell her. All she could do was brush the hairs away from her face, taking the opportunity to cup her chin and lifting her face to meet her eyes again.

Coral inhaled deeply and burst out in a huge grin.

"Hey...do you want to get out of here? I already checked out all the guys and they're all fished out!" The expression made Natalie smile slightly and nod to her offer.

They stood up and Natalie tried to iron out the wrinkles on her black lacey dress. Coral took the opportunity to eyeball her friend's outfit.

"Where did you buy that gem of a dress?"
Coral suddenly noticed a hint of a frown.
"Bo bought it for me."

Awkward...

To fix the situation Coral held Natalie by the shoulders, shook her playfully and added: "Don't be one of those moping friends, 'kay? I mean, I totally get where you're coming from but hey, don't stay there for too long." She finished with a wink and took Natalie by the hand, leading her to her car.

The road led them to a quaint coffee shop, which was pretty packed since it was still morning and people needing their caffeine shot for the day. Coral was always completely comfortable in situations like these: people bumping into you, someone accidentally elbowing you in the chest or uncomfortable casualties like those.

Natalie admired that of her friend: the petite, plump, but that compensated with the sassy attitude and out-there life. She on the other hand was tremendously shy in uncertain situations and was always polite, and old-fashioned. They complemented eachother perfectly, the ying to the yang. She loved having her as a friend.

"Thank you for getting me out of that house."
Coral turned to face her and raised both eyebrows in astonishment.
"Well babe you had to get out of there. Those people were a drab and it was starting to rub off on you."

She continued looking at the menu before she added with a jump in her chair: "And we both know that's never good."

And they both burst into laughter.

Cont. Chapter One

-------------
"So tell me something..." Coral played with the straw of her frozen coffee drink. "What do you plan on doing now? I mean, are you going to stay here or are you coming back to New York?"

Natalie took a deep breath and just leaned back on her chair, slouching a bit while scratching her head.

"Well...I'm definitely going back. That's for sure!" She paused and squinted her eyes when she looked away. "New York's home, you know? And it's not like I really wanted to come here..."

"What was that?" Her friend was confused.
"Nothing, nothing. You know me, thinking out loud."
"No... you've been one to express your thoughts so openly like that."

Natalie felt embarrased saying that she didn't really want to move to New Jersey with Bo. Sure she had done it for him, but she was never in love with the idea of moving out of the city. Although she loved him, she had always regreted leaving. But of course, she never told him anything. She remained quiet for the four and half years that they were together. Finally she was letting it out. Slowly, but surely.

"I don't know Coral, maybe I'm changing."
"Sure! That's a possibility."

Coral had no idea what was up with her. Her boyfriend had died, and yet she seemed cool. No depression, no nothing! Either she was really strong or in complete denial. The only thing that she could do was hope it was the first.

All of the sudden Natalie blurted out: "Help me move back tonight!"
She nearly choked on her drink. "What? Tonight?"

Natalie nodded with enthusiasm.

"Cool..." Coral was a bit skeptical but still decided to help her friend out.
"I need to leave." What sounded like an explanation. "My head can't take it here. I miss him already and too much..." Her voice trailed off with a heavy tone.

Right then, Natalie bit her lower lip to avoid crying but terribly failed. Tears began to streem uncontrolably down her face. Her sorrow was too much and too great for her to bear. The truth is she was miserable and hurt, she had lost her man and felt no hope whatsoever in rebuilding a life without him.

It was a good thing that she had Coral there for her, who stretched across the table to over her support.

"Cry all you want now, baby. Go ahead." She whispered softly. "Give it some time and you will see. You'll be fine."

Wiping her eyes, Natalie replied: "How can you be so sure?"
"I can't."

Natalie smirked at her.

"But you can hope for best, right?"
"Yeah..." She wasn't really sure ifshe could even do that, but still...she trusted her dear Coral.

"Now...I think we've got to go. If you want to pack and catch an early train out of here!"

I'm glad that I'm the first to review and give my thoughts on this. I want to say that you've started this off very well, with the sorrow of Natalie pulling us in, wanting to learn more.

I'm curious to know how she "lost" Bo, what this means for her in the present, and how will things look in the future. This can't be easy for her to go through (at such a young age, I'm assuming); but as her friend Corel says, things will turn out "fine" in the end. Right now that might be difficult for Natalie to see that, but I do believe it, too.

Great beginning! emoticon

Re: Somersault

Chapter two: End Theme

The apartment was impecable, terribly fancy and posh. There were no flowers anywhere, no paintings of any sort, not even a single picture on the mantelpiece. It was all very minimalist and chic, and the floors were so clean, anyone could see their own relflection on it.

It was all full of grays and blacks. Even the furniture was dark and weird to sit on. Although it was an expensive place to live in, it didn't seem homey or inviting.

At that particular moment, it felt even more frigid, since all you could hear was silence...

Silence in the hallways, the spacious kitchen, the bathroom big enough to fit a tiny village...everywhere. The air was still and somewhat heavy. Obviously the place was used to not having any human presence of any sort. Its owner was never around and far too busy doing what he did best and spending time in another's apartment. Poor thing, the place was lonely.

Until...the front door flew open and hit the wall with a loud "bang".

"That has got to be the lousiest excuse I have ever heard!" Orlando barged in throwing the keys on top of the entrance table, with a terrible tone.
"Orlando would listen to yourself!" A woman replied as she followed him, with an angry tone herself. She threw the door shut, creating the same big "bang" as when Orlando had opened it.

He paced towards the bedroom and began to remove his black tie. The voice behind him continued...

"I can't believe that you would make such a big deal out of this! I mean, are you going to keep acting this way everytime I talk to someone other than you?"

Orlando turned on his heels to face her standing right in front of him.

"No, Miranda. It's not just "someone", it's just one."
"Oh please..." She scoffed.
"Oh, don't lie. Please don't lie. You're just making yourself look worse."

With a harsh scowl, he turned around and continued undressing, while Miranda stood there with her designer evening gown, looking greatly offended. Meanwhile Orlando took of his jacket and threw on the bed.

"Why are you acting like this?" She tried to sound innocent, but all she did was make him snap.

He growled in frustration and rushed towards her again.

"Miranda, if you want to leave me, just do it, ok? Don't go around pretending that you indeed love me, when I know that you don't!" He held his finger up and pointed it directly at her while his eyes filled with rage penetrated hers.

She found herself with no words. She found herself caught. She found herself completely embarrassed.

Miranda lowered her eyes and stood there with a deep feeling of guilt on her shoulders. This shattered Orlando's harsh exterior and he suddenly changed from one extreme to the other. He cupped her chin and lifted her head and searched for her eyes, but she was looking away.

"Baby, you know that you're my world and that you have been so for these past months." His voice was softer and sweeter. "You know that I've been nothing but honest to you. And that we've always believed in full trust in eachother. "
"I know..."
"Then..." he paused and swallowed hard. "...tell me the truth. Besides me, are you seeing anyone?"

Please say no, please say no, please say no.

"Yes." She replied, now looking at him with great candor.

He let go of her chin slowly as he felt his heart sink into his stomach. Orlando shut his eyes and made his way towards the bed. He sat down all hunchedback, letting his arms dangle from him.

"You say it so easily." His voice was a mere whisper, hardly understandable.

Then: a very, very long pause. In all reality it must have been about one minute long. But for the both of them, it seemed an eternity. The most awkward of eternities.
Suddenly, he found his voice again.

"Can you at least tell me who it is?"
"What for?" Miranda's voice was equally fragil.
He laughed shyly.
"Don't know."
"Then what's the point."
"I don't know, ok?" Orlando lifted his head and rested his arms on his legs. His voice was much more stronger.

Then he saw her standing there with her strappy sequined nude gown and she looked more beautiful than ever. This woman had won his heart and he couldn't believe that right at that moment she was tearing it inot pieces. It was just not fair. Was she worth trying to work things out? He had absolutely no idea. But he sure was willing to find out.

As he decided to firmly and sternly stand he said: "You know what, Miranda? I would've never done that to you."

She scoffed and crossed her arms, which made her look like a twelve year old.

"Oh, so now you're playing the victim?"

That tiny question made his anger level rise up to boiling point.

"For Christ's sake, Miranda I am the f***ing victim here!!" He raised his voice once again, to the point of shouting. "Don't you see? You f*ck some other guy and you expect me to be fine with it. To share your love? Your body? To share you, Miranda? Now that in my world it's not common. If that's as normal as taking a piss for you australians, then fine! But not for me it is."

Again: silence. Orlando breathed heavily and he could then feel his knees starting to give in. She could not look into his eyes, although he could not stop looking into hers. Even though it caused him tons of pain to do so.

Once he felt that she had nothing to say for herself and that she had basically destroyed him, he nodded and made his way back to the bed and picked up his jacket. He said nothing as he walked pass her. Not even a kiss on her cheek.

Miranda then felt the terrible guilt building up, once she had realized that she had ended their relationship. And although she was seeing another, she couldn't help but feel sorry for Orlando. By the time she rushed out of the bedroom, he was already at the end of the hallway.

"Orlando?"

He stopped dead in his tracks as he felt his heart jumped a bit when he heard her calling out his name. Then he slowly turned around and face her once again from across the hallway.

"Yes?"
"I am so sorry."

That was it. It was over. All because of that simple phrase that was blurted out from a distance.

"Me too." Orlando could feel himself getting choked up and he could hear his voice and lips quivering. But still, he had to say one last thing.

"I left my copies of the appartment on the entrance table. Can I umm...have your copies to mine, back?"
"Sure." Miranda spoke softly and with shock. She wasn't expecting that.

She opened up her clutch and took them out, walked towards him and stretched out her arms so she could maintain a distance.

"Here you go."
"Thank you, Miranda." He grabbed them gently.
"For giving you back the keys?"
"For everything." He gave a hint of smile, but a really faint one.

Then he showed himself out and towards the elevators. His hands played with the keys as he waited for the doors to open. Seeing the keys that he had given her so as she could let herself in, was a simple reminder of how he let her take a special place in his heart.

But that was no more. That no longer existed. The "special place" would be empty from now on.

"Ding". The doors opened and her walked into the elevator. As soon as they closed he let out all of his tears and began to cry and cry until he felt near to the lobby. He wiped his eyes with the sleeves of his own jacket and when the doors opened, he rushed out of the building, not even taking the time to say goodbye to the guards, and led himself through the night in the big city.

Re: Somersault

It seems that Orlando is a little down on his luck in the love department. Miranda, at least, was very candid with him and told him the truth, that way no need to play games that people often play with each other. I'm glad she told him, cos now he can move on...

I love the way that ended...so melancholy. I have a feeling that as he loses himself in the big city, someone just may find him. emoticon

Chapter three: Ain't going nowhere

"Welcome back to the big bad city, darling!" That was Coral with her best attempt of a british accent.

Natalie smiled as she kept staring at the city from the cab window. It was a delighful feeling, she was a kid again. At that moment she was re-taking in all that was charming about New York in the first place: the people, the buildings, the atmosphere. She loved it all! Although it had been four years since coming back, she felt like it had been almost tewnty. She hadn't realized she missed it that much and because of that, she was excited to be back. Most of all, she knew this was a hint of a new beggining.

For her, this was home. There was no other place like it. This city made her believe in herself and all the possibilities of her future.

"I'm so glad to be back." She sighed.
"So am I, babe!"
"You know what? I was thinking of looking for an apartment..." Natalie said as they passed several apartment buildings.
"Oh?"

She kept on looking outside.

"Yeah...I mean, I don't want to stay at your place forever, you know? Like, I don't want us to be know as the friends that are roomates. That sound a bit sorority-ish doesn't it?"
"Sure, yeah! Totally agree. I mean, you'll totally cramp my style!"

Natalie turned around a bit confused and saw that her friend was giving her a slightly wicked look.

"And just how will I cramp your style?"
"Well...for example, if a guy wants to come up he wouldn't want to find my "roomate" moping around in her pajamas."

Now that sounded a bit like an offense.

"Who says I'll be moping??" She finished off the question with a giggle but her smile quickly faded. "Just give me some time, 'kay? Just a bit..."

The feeling of her heavy heart was suddenly kicking in and she was being reminded of what she was trying to leave behind. Then came a moment of doubt. She doubted ever being able to forget and move on. She doubted on her ability to find happiness and comfort.

Her face relfected just that and Coral picked up on it.

"Nat, I was kidding! Really, hun. You won't cramp my style at all! I'm actually looking forward to our little sorority."

It was right at that moment that Natalie could really see just how much she loved Coral and how much she meaned to her.

"I lied. I'm looking forward to it too."

Both girls laughed softly and exchanged winks. Suddenly the cab came to a stop in front of a really elegant building.

Coral looked outsite the window and made a little dance in the backseat of the cab.

"Ooh! We're home! We're hooomeee!!" That last one sounded quite a bit operatic, which made Natalie burst into laughter. "Come on! Let's get your things."

Coral quickly exited the car and rushed to the trunk. Natalie, still sitting, could hear her arguing with the cab driver about how she was strong enough to carry everything, when all she was rally saying was that she didn't want to tip him.

Natalie shook her head and laughed because she knew that no matter what, Coral wouldn't change for nothing or no one! As soon as she made her way out of the cab as well, she couldn't believe her surroundings. This was a very expensive and luxurious neighborhood! Her head kept turning and turning; witnessing everything. She could even feel her mouth open just a bit in awe. With the same amazement, she helped out her with her own luggage.

"Wow, Coral...this is nice."
"You know, I'm a big helper!" She took out the biggest suitcase and struggled with it until she reached the entrance.
"I meant your street!" Natalie was still looking everywhere but into the trunk.
"Oh! That!" Coral giggled.

The door man, as soon as he saw the heavy load that had to be carried by the two girls, he quickly offered to give them a hand.

"Let me help you there miss Coral." He took the suitcase from her hands.
"Why, thank you Landon! You're always so cute!" Coral stood there eyeballing him until he blushed. "Tell me something, Landon: why is it that you won't ask me out?"

He seemed like a little boy all shy and innocent. All he could do was move his feet around in embarassement.

"I thought I told you miss Coral: work issues. I'm not allowed."

And just when Coral was about to respond Natalie interrupted with the rest of her luggage dangling all over, making it almost impossible to move.

"And no, Coral. he won't quit his job. So don't waste your time asking him to do so!"
"Oh! Let me help you there." He rushed to assist her as well.
"Thanks..."

She couldn't help but notice how cute he actually was. His eyes were all big and blue, under his funny uniform hat she noticed
that his hair was short and dark and that his entire body built well. After all, he did handle all her suitcases and bags.

"Now--" He woke her from the silly day dream. "--I'll take these to the elevators and the guard inside will help you with them until you get to you apartment."
"That's so sweet, Landon! Thank you!" Coral couldn't be flirting more. And Natalie couldn't be more mortified by her friend.

As soon as they entered the apartment, Natalie stood even more in awe.

"Can I ask you something, Coral?"
"Sure!" She responded while kicking off her heels and letting her long curly hair down.
"Does being a publicist really pay this good??"
Coral laughed in an uproar and continued making her way around her place.
"Well...yeah. I mean, it does if you have popular clients."

Natalie followed her voice as she kept staring at the place. There were floor-to-ceiling windows, shaggy rugs and designer furniture everywhere. The place was really big enough for an entire sorority.

"What kind of clients?" She catched up with her as she entered a room in a corner that seemed to be the guest room.
"Singers, actors, you know! People that need me to handle their publicity!"

Of course Coral was not going to name names and Natalie understood that completely. Although she wanted to hear the name of at least one.

"So..." Coral started her tour. "This is your room. Nice and cozy. You have your own bathroom and closet. Let me see, what else? Oh, yeah! The room has a dimmer, so if you're feeling sexy and decide to lower the lights, feel free! This is your room for as long as you wish."

"Yeah, right. Me. Feeling sexy? I believe that this is the least sexy I've felt in a long time." She scoffed.

Coral took glanced at her from the corner of her eye and saw her frown a bit. So, she quickly decided to cheer her up a bit.

"Do you want something to drink?"
"Not really. I'm just tired."

They both turned around to face eachother.

"You sure?"
"Yep."
"Well then, you rest and I'll bring your things here. Piece by piece."

Natalie smiled and she was so grateful that she felt the urge to throw herself and hug Coral. And so she did. This took Coral by surprise, but she hugged her back.

"Don't leave me, Coral."
She heard her whisper.
"I ain't going nowhere..."

Natalie felt she had a true friend in her. But she had absolutely no idea that Coral would play a much more important role in her life. A role that would change everything.
