Re: Somersault
Chapter eleven: Full House
"Where in the hell could she be?!" Coral paced across her living room and headed straight to the kitchen. Food had always been her comfort. Specially in times of desperation, like for instance, have your best friend go missing. So she opened the fridge with a hard and exasperated force. She eyed every shelf: apples, yogurt, cucumber, tomatoes... "Oh great. Why did I let her buy groceries? I forgot she doesn't believe in 'twinkies'! This is a b*tch!" Sensing that her appetite had suddenly vanished, she closed the fridge door and dragged her feet towards the black leather-y, expensive looking sofa that was the center piece in her living room and fell over it.
Coral kept staring at the ceiling, wondering what had kept Natalie. Maybe she gone jogging. "No, she's not the "jogging" type." Maybe she decided to see the sights. "Well...she does know the city like no one else, so...that's probably not it." Maybe she went out clubbing. "She knows I'd kill her if she didn't invite me." Maybe she was mugged. "Mugged and raped!" Or abducted. "And held for ransom?!" At the thought, Coral jumped off the couch and felt her heart race uncontrollably. "Holy sh*t! I can't just stay here and do nothing!" She rushed to the phone and held it for a quick second before thinking who it was that would hear her desperation. "The police?" She thought quickly. "No, they'll just make me answer too much questions and fill out papers." Her foot tapped the floor as she lost her own patience. "I know, I know!..." Coral fervently dialed the phone number of the person that had popped into her head at that precise moment.
"Oh please be there..." Ring... "Please, please!" Ring... "Oh, come on!!!!"
"Hello?" She jumped in place and squeeled in excitement as soon as she heard the soft spoken voice on the other end.
"Harry?"
"Yes?"
"It's Coral."
"Oh! How are you?"
"Well...honestly...I'm freaking out here!"
He chuckled softly. "Oh really? How come?"
"I'm worried for Natalie!"
"Why? What happened?" Suddenly his voice was alert and gravely serious.
"You see, that's the thing! I really don't know where she is. When I got back from work, she wasn't here. And she didn't even leave a note saying where she had gone! Which is so unlike her. I just...I have no idea what to do." Her voice was shaken up, almost on the verge of bawling.
"It's okay. Me and Joshua will be there in a few minutes. But for now, I need you to relax, okay? We'll sort this out."
"Okay, okay..."
"See you in a bit?"
Coral deeply appreciated him right then. "Thank you, Harry. You've been always the caring one."
"Yeah...I guess." She could sense him all embarassed at the other end. "Later, C."
"Bye." Immediately, she felt reassured and slightly calmer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He saw her speaking that close to him and he just wished that he was brave enough to lean forward those few inches and plainly kiss her. But he had to be a bit more intrusive and disrespectful, which was not the case with him. Although he did enjoy the scenery from up close. Orlando took his time to gaze upon her plump, heart shaped lips and up to her round and cute nose, up to her dazzling eyes. Feeling in danger of keeping his distance, he interupted his own trance. He cleared his throat soflty and replied to her somewhat mischievieus question: "I think you should head back to Coral's."
Natalie sat back, erasing her grin and felt both rejected and embarassed. "Did I say something wrong?"
Orlando quickly stood up and took out his wallet and began to count the bills inside it. "No. Absolutely not!" "It was just too right." "It's just that Coral's worried sick about you and I'm the one who's keeping you." It wasn't long before he realized the double meaning in that sentence. "And I feel guilty for causing her any trouble." "Well..."
Natalie stood up as well, still unsure of the awkward ending to such a lovely evening. "Are you sure it's not because of me?" Orlando dropped a few bills on the table and smiled as he kept looking down, while putting his wallet back in his jean's back pocket. He looked up, dragging up the same smile. "Trust me. This has been the coolest conversation I've had, well...in a while."
"Oh!" Natalie was deeply flattered. "Same here." She picked her purse up from the floor and secured it on her shoulder, placed her hand on the back of the chair, supporting her weight, and the other on her tiny waist, making her long wavy locks sway to one side. Her head tilted slightly and looked at him with the same delighful smile and those wonderful glistening eyes. And they forced him to smile even brighter. After some time just smiling at eachother, they both felt the silliness of it all and chuckled in a playful shame.
"I'm going to, um...pay up front, okay?" Natalie nodded while looking away, still embarassed, trying to hold back her smile. "Don't go anywhere." She shook her head slowly. Her brain just couldn't figure out what to say.
Orlando walked away in a flash and once she found herself alone, she felt fine with having a small burst. Natalie exhaled heavily and ran her hands through her head all the way back to her neck. "Oh my God...was I...flirting? With him? Oh my God! I just stood there at stared at him like an idiot! Yeah, that was really subtle, Natalie! Sh*t...I was flirting! NO! I WAS NOT! Absolutely not!!" She started biting her fingernails and reflected on what a fool she had made of herself.
"You know, you shouldn't do that." His mellow and deep voice made her jump in fright.
"Huh? What?"
"Your nails. You shouldn't bite them." Looking all the celebrity he was with his aviator sunglasses now on, he nodded at her hands.
"Oh. I don't, usually." She took her hand out from her mouth and tucked them shyly in her jeans pockets. Orlando looked at her skeptically.
"Nervous?"
"Not really. Just...nope! I'm fine."
He smiled still not believing a single word, but he didn't want to keep on putting her on the spot. "Aha...well then, let's take you home!" Orlando signaled for them to leave but Natalie didn't quite get it.
"Wait, you're coming with me?"
"Well, Natalie, I think I should. Wasn't I who kept you here all this time? It is really my fault that Coral's freaking out."
"You didn't keep me here..."
"Oh, no?"
"I wanted to stay too." Another childish moment of flirting by Natalie! She was now really beating herself up for being such a big mouth. Orlando laughed delicately at her lovely remark. "Ok! Before you think about anything else, I just want to say that I didn't mean it like that." Natalie quickly corrected.
"Like what?"
"I don't know...something deep."
"Oh, no! Don't worry. I took it as something...shallow." He joked, making them both chuckle.
"It's just that...this was nice, you know? I needed something of this nature. No idea I would be sharing it with you, though!"
"I'm glad you did."
"Yeah!" A brief pause took place between them and a profound moment of appreciation was linking them both together. "Shall we?" Natalie asked in a good-humored tone.
"We shall." He replied.
Re: Somersault
Again...dabbling with p.o.v. This time: it's both.
Cont. Chapter eleven
So we walked, and walked. Side by side. Like pals. And the conversation never stopped. She even laughed at every stupid thing I would say to her and to hear her was wonderful. This girl was gracious and warm, agreeable and polite. There was nothing that she didn't comment on, every single subjet made her feel greatly enthused and she just had to speak. Even cuter was when she would skip in excitement whenever we would agree on something, which was...almost all the time.
The city lights began to emerge from the cold, dark buildings while passing them by. And I wanted it to go on forever; to be near her and take in her vibrant and soulful energy. But it was sad in a way...I really couldn't have her. It's not like she was wearing a sign that said "don't even try it", that only guys could read, but something inside me (maybe my conscience) told me not to...well, "try it". Don't know. It was weird. Amidst all of the fun we were having, just talking, I kind of felt wrong to be looking at her so much. A friendship would be enough, anything more?...Probably underserving. She seemed to be this pure creature that floated around in this city, wandering, entrancing men...specially me.
"Where are we going?" I heard her ask me with a bad sense of direction. We both stopped dead in our tracks and looked around. This was not where were supposed to be. Whe had already passed Coral's street and we had ended up way further.
"I dunno...you're the one whose leading the way!"
"Me?! All this time I've been following you!"
And I looked at her who was looking at me with a shocked face. "Aren't you supposed to be the expert here?"
"Yeah...but, you just dragged me so into the conversation, that I forgot to turn a left about twenty-five, twenty-six blocks back!"
"Twenty-six?!" I was already tired, maybe exhausted from the walk.
"Or twenty-five, yeah..." She kept looking around.
"F*ck." I mumbled.
"Sorry..."
"No, no, no! It's okay...I mean, yeah, it's fine. It's my fault. I really should walk around more often." I began heaving and panting in obvious exageration. Just to hear her laugh again. And it worked. She looked over my shoulder and spotted something. "What?" I looked around and saw the Central Park. After turning around to face her once again, she softly said:
"Will you look at that?" Since her head reached up to my chest, I loved the way she would look up to me when saying anything at all. "We made it to Central Park!" And her eyes looking at me, always made me smile even brighter.
"Yes, we did."
Right then, as we were having one of those silent moments which we were growing to be so good at, I saw a man taking a picture of us across the street. At least they didn't get a picture of Natalie's face, since she was standing in front of me, arms crossed, her back facing the lense. But it still f*cking pissed me off. And they just stood there taking multiple shots. So I, boiling in anger from the inside, politely ignored him.
Natalie picked up on my mood swing and asked me with a concerned look on her face: "What?"
"Come with me." I took her by the hand and walked quickly into the park, which was right behind us. In all my deffensiveness, I had not stopped to think about how this was the first time that we had held hands. Honestly...it was cute: me grasping her smaller hand in mine...Anyways, I don't think she thought much of it, so I played it cool myself. What was even more curious was that she never asked me where it was that we were going, or why were we rushing off the sidewalk. She just trusted in me fully.
After a few minutes of walking deeper, I stopped when I saw a bench. A bench! And how I wanted to sit down! So I did. But then Natalie just stood there looking at me, heaving lightly. She looked bewildered.
"What'd just happen?"
"There was a photographer taking pictures of us, right there on the sidewalk." She raised her eyebrows and was thrown back by my response. "I didn't want you to be a target because of me." Her lips parted slightly in disbelief and she slowly sat right next to me, hunching forwards with her hands tucked under her thighs. Then she looked at me sweetly and offered me half a smile.
"Were you protecting me? Just now?"
I nodded. "Yes, Natalie." A quick silence again. "And I'm not saying that you can't defend yourself! Because I believe you to be strong enough for any guy, but...you can never be strong enough when it comes to something as demoralizing as being displayed on a window, as if you were an object." She still wouldn't say anything, and I couldn't stop staring at her in the eyes. "And you're not an object...You're lovely."
-----------
He thought I was lovely. And he protected me from something, as he put it, "demoralizing". Slowly, but surely, Orlando was proving to be nothing short of a gentleman. Nothing short of a good friend. I had to smile at him, at his intentions, his motives. For all knew, he was kind hearted and true. Even when he held my hand as he led me through the park, I knew that, although thrilling, he only saw it as an instinct. Nothing amorous.
And now there we sat. One next to the other. Looking around, with not much to say now, after hours of non-stop chatter. The night sky was now glorious and all the hustle from the streets had diminished. That moment was growing more and more discreetly romantic, and I don't know if I wanted that. I took a secret glance at my watch, which marked 9:35.
"Is it late for you?" He caught me. I didn't want to get too carried away or anything, but I thought I saw him frown from the corner of my eye.
"It is if I have a friend who's still waiting for any sign of my existence."
"Right." We both shared a chuckled as the image of Coral came back to us. Then he stood up and gazed down upon me, offering me a lifting hand. "Shall we?" He smiled.
A smiled back. "We shall."
Re: Somersault
Thanks! I read yours, by the way... VERY nice story there. You know what I thought was funny, though? The fact that yours takes place in Boston and mine in New York (the rival baseball teams). Oh! And I LOVE "Lost" too!
Re: Somersault
Cont. Chapter eleven
His hand felt nice against mine; warm, firm yet delicate, soft...I stood up and faced him, our bodies inches away. My eyes had to look up a little higher than usual in order to reach his brown ones. But before we would go into one of our stupid staring contests, I said, just to avoid that:
"You know...I never thought that I would be spending almost an entire day with such a famous actor."
To that he lowered his head in shame and laughed. He looked up again and replied with a smile: "Oh, really?"
"At all!"
"And how was I?" I noticed a subtle change in his tone. A bit more...worried. As if he really wanted to create a good impresion. Not sure why, because I always thought that when you're such an adored person, throughout the nation, you didn't have to care what people thought about you. They would always love for who you are. But Orlando gave off the "scent" that he was worried about leaving me with nothing but good thoughts about him. And I have to admit...it was kind of cute of him to be so anxious for my aproval.
"Well...you were not what I expected."
"What? And by that you mean...?"
"You know, when I saw you at the restaurant the other day, I thought you were very serious, kept to yourself, somber, quiet and pretty much unfriendly." I saw him look quite hurt as he scoffed and looked away to his side while shaking his head in disdain.
"That night..." He spoke, still staring off into the night. "...I wasn't myself. I was going through--"
"You don't have to explain anything." I tilted my head to find his eyes and tell what I really thought about him. Once he looked at me, I smiled at him. "I'm just glad you proved me wrong."
-----------
Honestly at that moment, the first thing that came to mind was to kiss her. She couldn't have been more delightful. This entire day, I had been holding back from doing anything that she would hate me for afterwards. But it was growing to be more and more difficult if she would insist on being so beautiful. As I smiled back at her, clenched my jaw and swallowed hard, I didn't want to kiss her...but I truly felt like I had to. "Don't be such a f*cking idiot, man. You just broke-up with someone and now you're into some other girl? That's really nice of you...I'm such a d*ck..."
"Anytime..." That's ALL I could mumble. Even then I thought I was flirting! Which was really frustrating for me. I didn't want to flirt, just like I didn't want to press my lips unto hers! Still, it came off me as something natural.
"So..." She swayed playfully from side to side.
"Mm-hmm?" I tried to mimic her tone.
"...are we going to keep doing this everytime we stop to talk or will I ever get home anytime soon?"
"Oh! Right! Let's go..." I clapped my hands once as a sign of "enthusiasm" when I really wasn't.
"Let's."
So we walked some more, until we finally reached that place which we were set out to go to in the first place. Needless to say, our exchange of words never stopped. By now it was an effortless thing, to speak to her. When we finally reached the building, we were greeted by this "Landon" guy. The doorman. As soon as Natalie said a casual "hello" to him, I could see just how excesively happy he looked at just the sight of her. Since Natalie was walking just a few steps in front of me, I took a long second to stare at how he kept on looking at Natalie as she headed for the elevators. He didn't even see me staring at him. Right at that moment a felt a bitter gust of jealousy hit me right on the chest. Certainly, I didn't want him looking at her like that. When I caught with Natalie inside the elevators, she smile like usual and as soon as the doors slid shut, I had to speak out.
"He likes you, you know?" And I offered her a cheeky grin. But to my surprise, she was thrown by my comment.
"What? Who?"
"Landon."
"You think?" Her tone was slightly interested in what I was saying, which was sort of painful for me.
"Guys can tell on other guys."
"Huh!" She tied her hair into a messy pony tail and folded her arms in front of her. She was acting too cool, and I was desperate to know what she really thought about him.
"So, do you fancy him?" I raised an eyebrow and looked at her out of the corner of my eye. Again, she looked startled and gazed up at me with a shocked face as if to say that she couldn't believe that I just wouldn't let it go. Then she gave me a mischievous smile.
"He is cute, Orlando." But then her eyes turned to face forward again and I heard her giggle softly. I, on the other hand, was feeling incredibly broken-hearted.
I could feel she was telling the truth. But then she added: "Although, I don't think I--how did you put it? "fancy"? him. As a matter of fact I don't think I'm ready to "fancy" any one." And that made me feel subliminaly rejected, until she spoke again. "For now."
-----------
If I had learned something about myself that day was that I was in fact not ready to be someone. And the fact that I had spent nearly twelve hours with such an alluring and gorgeous man like Orlando Bloom, made me confirm that. Despite his manly features and sensual ways of carrying himself, I couldn't see myself taking it further with him, or any man for that effect. Now, I was sure that it wouldn't be forever. Like I said, this was just "for the time being". Still, my coming back out into the dating world would be soon, rather than "now". When I looked back at Orlando who was about to say something, the polite elevator bell told us that we had arrived at our desired floor.
"Ugh! I can't believe that we're actually here!" I said as I mockingly dragged by feet down the hall, all the way to Coral's door. I even heard Orlando laugh softly behind me. Then, as soon as we reached Coral's door, i knockd softly and quickly looked at him. "I am so much trouble."
"I know..." And we both began to laugh heartedly.
Suddenly, we both abruptly stopped once we felt the door fly wide open. We were caught. "Oh...my...God. Harry, Joshua!! She's back!!" Coral threw weight on me and squeezed me to the point where I couldn't really breath. "Sh*t, I thought you were mugged or raped or something!" By now, it was even hard to spit out the words.
"C-Coral...I...can't...breathe."
"Oh! Sorry..." She let me go and looked at me with her big dark, emotional eyes. I was sure she would say something like "I love you" or "Are you hurt?", but no. Instead she blurted out: "You b*tch...Do you know what it's like to be twenty-six and have the feeling that you're going to die of a heart attack?"
I scoffed: "Sorry, mom." Coral could be sometimes unbelievably difficult. So I looked to my right where Orlando was now leaning against the wall with his eyebrows all furrowed in concern. It was then that Coral realized that I wasn't alone.
"O-Orlando?" She couldn't believe it was him.
"Hey, hun."
"Um...how is it that you two know eachother?" Coral sounded as puzzled as I had ever heard her.
"Can we talk about this inside? 'Cause I don't think that out here is the most appropiate place."
"Oh! Well, duh! Come in, Orlando!"
The three of us made our way inside but right at that moment I stopped dead in my tracks as I saw both Harry and Joshua standing a few feet away from us. Immediately I ruched to Harry's arms first and he took me in with his gentle embrace. "What are you guys doing here, huh?"
They always brought joy to my life.
"Coral called us." Joshua replied. So, I broke away from Harry and wrapped my arms around Joshua as well.
"Oh, she did?"
"Yeah, she was freaking out..." Harry's mellow and soft voice spoke next. Then I realized that Orlando was still there. I quickly turned around and saw him trying to explain (or so I thought) how it was that we came to cross paths. Either way, I interrupted.
"Excuse me, Coral." She threw her hands up in the air in frustration and turned away towards the fridge. I didn't care. Then I signaled Orlando to get closer. "Orlando this is a representation of my guys. Harry and Joshua." He was polite and curteous extending his hands in a formal greeting. Joshua, on the other hand, was quite taken back at the fact that he was meeting such a famous actor. But not Harry. He was quiet and somber and never stopped staring at Orlando with a distrusting fixation in his eyes. Even worse was after that, the four of us found ourselves speechless. Another awkward moment throughout the day! About a minute of uncomfortable silence, Joshua saved the moment.
"So you, like, travel a lot, huh?"
"Um...yes. I guess I could say it's one of the perks."
"Is it really?" Harry's tone brought tension back.
Re: Somersault
Cont. Chapter eleven
"Sure." Orlando spoke back, incredibly sure of himself. "You get to see places, absorb different cultures and types of people. It's a good way to spend your life." He made me smile again.
"A good way to spend your life, eh? Skipping the globe, never settling down, afraid of commitment?"
There I stood, between them both. Looking at both their faces as they spoke and Harry's comments were beginning to freak me out. This was not my Harry, nor the Harry Joshua knew either, since he was just as puzzled about the roughness in Harry's attitude. My breath was getting quicker and I just wanted it to end, to stop whatever was that had bothered him and make the atmosphere somewhat lighter.
Just then, I saw Orlando opening his mouth to speak back, but I quickly grabbed his arm signaling him not to speak and he automatically swallowed his words, for which I was incredibly thankful. Joshua and I exchanged looks and both knew what the other had to do.
"Well!" Joshua exclaimed with cheer as he clapped his hands. "Harry? I guess our job here is done, man. We can go now."
"I don't feel like leaving." Harry replied annoyed. So Joshua threw his arm around his neck.
"We have to get up early tomorrow...we both have jobs, you know?"
"Yeah..."
"Come! Let's say buh-bye to Coral and be on our way." So he pulled a hesistant Harry away towards the kitchen, but then yelled back at us: "Nice to meet you, Orlando! Good night sweetie!"
"Same here." Orlando replied with the same politeness.
"Good night Josh! Good night Harry."
A few moments later, they left and I could all of the sudden, breathe. Coral tiptoed towards me and asked unsure of what had just happened almost in a whisper in my ear: "Did
something happen?"
"It was weird." My mind hadn't really found an explanation as to why Harry had been so harsh before. He was always the voice of reason in the group, the mature one. "I'll tell you later." For the moment, I wanted to erase that it ever happened.
"Ok..." Coral whispered back again. "So!" She turned her attention Orlando as well. "How is it that in this universe, this galaxy and planet, country and state, city and street, you two found eachother? Spill..."
I laughed hiding my embarassment. "Coral..."
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Ok then, tell me. 'Cause this is really a freaky coincidence. I mean, Orlando's one of my good friends, you're my best friend...and then you turn up coming here together! Now, what are the chances of that??"
Orlando leaned forward in interest, with his fingers entwined and looked at me. "Very slim, actually." Then he winked at me in a friendly way. I sat at the armrest of the couch right from the one in which Orlando was sitting, with a smile drawn across my face and Coral leaned over the back of a chaise she had in between the two. "Do you want to tell the story, or should I?" He asked me.
"No, no. You go ahead."
"Why, thank you Natalie."
"You're welcome, Orlando." We bothe tried to sound as proper as we could.
"So here's the thing: Natalie here went to see an appartment that was for sale Downtown. And it just so happens that went to see the same one! Apparently we have similar tastes in property..."
"Yeah, but we had met previously at the restaurant." I added.
"Oh yeah! That right."
"Umm...excuse me, what restaurant?" Coral had no idea.
"The one I went to with the guys."
"Oh!...And you were there too, Orlando?"
"That's where I met Kate for dinner."
"Oooohh! Talk about coincidences." Now it all made sense for her.
Then Orlando went on to explain everything that had happened that entire day: the long lunch, her call of desperation with me sitting across him, the unnecesary walk to the park, the photographer... But every word that came out of his mouth was more and more opaque as only one thing kept reverberating in my head, over and over again.
"Kate? Who is Kate?"
