Gifts for Little Pea
My SIL hasn't found out if her Little Pea is a boy or girl yet (should know by next week though!) but I've already started making presents! My brother and SIL are literally starving artists so they don't have a lot of money to play around with. I'm striving to make really useful items instead of just cutesy junk that they don't need. The kiddo is due in mid January so I'm making some wintery newborn stuff right now.
The first completed project is a felted hat and bootie set. Felting is a very interesting process. I've made several things before using it so I figured this was a good project for me! I first knit the items in a larger size than needed out of 100% untreated wool.
Then put them in the sink in hot water with a bit of laundry detergent and knead and rub and just work the yarn into a lather until the individual hairs start to mat together. Eventually (these took about 5-10 minutes each)the entire piece will have a felted look. At this point you can stop or keep working to get the size desired. Since I don't know how big or small her baby will be, I just left them. I can change the size later if need be. I think they turned out really well and only took me 2 days to finish!

Re: Gifts for Little Pea
What a neat thing!! I've never heard of 'felting' before....I like that concept...a LOT. May have to try that on some of my scarves I crochet.
Another idea...some burp clothes. Can crochet/knit and then on the underside maybe attache some flannel so any spit up doesn't go through....and, you can felt the top layer so it's nice and soft for baby.
If not burp clothes...a changing pad for mom to take with her when she has to do errands. Rather than lay baby on those cold changing tables in the bathrooms or someplace less than clean for a little one...she'll have a nice, warm pad for the little one to lay on, and she can toss it in the wash when needed.
I love that you're doing this for your SiL and bro!! What a good sis you are!!!

Re: Gifts for Little Pea
Burp clothes are definitely on the list!
I checked out a book from the library - Sew and Go Baby - and there are a couple of cool ideas in there. I actually think I'll ask my SIL what she likes best though before making anything from it though. There are some cool diaper bags with fold out changing cloths as well as a little portable bed. I just don't know what kind of stuff she wants. Are they going to do cloth or disposable diapers? Breast feed or formula? These will make a difference for what kinds of gifts to make. So somethings are going to be a surprise, but others are going to be ok-ed in advance!

Re: Gifts for Little Pea
Good idea on OKing some things first. That way, you'll know for a fact that it will be used, and even more appreciated because you took the time to ask about some things first!

Re: Gifts for Little Pea
those are great Madness.
Get 1.25 yards of flannel to get a square. This when hemmed makes a large receiving blanket and much more useful than the little packaged ones at the stores.
My youngest (babe #4 due 11/5) swears by these larger flannel blankets for swaddling the baby to calm it down and make it feel secure those first weeks and months.
But those are nice for the baby.

Re: Gifts for Little Pea
Blankets like that would be a good project for me! While I did sew that Halloween costume last year, I haven't done anything since. But I would like to learn and hemming a blanket would sure be good practice!

Re: Gifts for Little Pea
I'm almost done with my second project - it's a little v-neck sweater. All the knitting is done, just need to sew it up now. It didn't come out as nice as I wanted, but I'm sure the baby won't mind!

Re: Gifts for Little Pea
Well I finished sewing the sweater last night. It came out MUCH better than I thought. There were some weird gaps in the stitches (not dropped stitches though...) but I was able to mend them when weaving in the ends. And the sleeves looked so short before. For some reason, they seem the right length now...?
But I did screw up on the gauge when I started. I didn't even check it (I guess I was in a hurry...only have 6 months left! ). So I had to adjust things while knitting and it should fit the baby NEXT winter (9-12 month size). But that's good - I'll have a gift for later if I forget to make something!
