tasty treats from the garden and nature
we have been watching the squash plants just waiting for some blossoms we could stuff and fry. (things grow slower up here) well this past week it was on. in order to round out the breaky with something worthy of the blossoms i made a lil trek to the creek for fresh brook trout. with the brookies on ice we venture into the garden before dawn and pick a mess of squash blossoms. back in the kitchen wendy mixed up a gluten free batter from scratch using some of our fresh eggs. the blossoms were opened and cleaned. then stuffed with goat cheese then dipped in the batter and pan fried along side the brookies. they had been cleaned and wrapped in prosciutto. of course it was all fried in bacon greese from our own bacon. i think we could eat like this every morning

I want to swing by your house for a meal!!
I've never heard of stuffed squash blossoms before. Actually I never knew that you could pick the blossoms, that they had to stay on 'til the fruit develops.

on squash you have both male and female blossoms. the femal blossom you can see a miniature squash right behind the blossom where as the male just has the slendor stem. while you can eat both, picking the female blossoms would postpone your quash harvest. the plant will make plenty more just might take a lil while. as long as you dont pick all the male blossoms there will be plenty to pollinste the squash.
in denever we have maybe 6-8 butternut squash plants. (probably less) and could pick close to 20 blossoms a day. down here i have several summer squash and a whole row of pumkin (sugar pie) i was picking close to 50 a day. all males. it seams the more you pic the more they make. i am sure it probably draws some energey from the plant making all the new blossoms that would have other wise gone to squash production. but i dont think it is drastic, the blossoms only last a day or so on the plant before they wither and are replaced. freshness in the key, pick them early before the sun comes upand use them right away or put them in a lil water in the fridge. just like cut flowers (thats is what they are after all) aside from stuffing them, we add them to salads and stirfries. even egg scrambles. you really can do just about anything with them.

I LOVE squash blossoms. I've bought some from farmers markets and the freshness was ok, but the only real way to do it is to grow your own!
